Bib Shorts, Chamois and Avoiding Saddle Sores

Why bibs work, wearing them correctly, chamois cream and hygiene

Cycling shorts solve a specific problem, and most discomfort on a bike comes from wearing or washing them wrongly rather than from the shorts themselves.

Why bibs rather than waist shorts

Braces hold the pad in position without a waistband pressing on the stomach in a bent riding position. That is the whole argument, and it becomes obvious after about two hours.

Nothing underneath

Cycling shorts are worn against the skin. Underwear adds seams that rub, holds moisture and defeats the pad entirely, and it is the single most common cause of saddle sores in new riders.

The pad

Chamois pads are shaped for the riding position and for anatomy, and men's and women's pads differ meaningfully. Thicker is not better — density and shape matter more, and an over-thick pad bunches.

Match the pad to the ride length. A thin race pad on a six-hour ride is uncomfortable, and a thick endurance pad is bulky for an hour.

Chamois cream

Reduces friction and helps on long rides. Apply to the pad, the skin or both, and choose one without fragrance if you are prone to irritation.

Hygiene

Get out of shorts immediately after riding and shower. Sitting around in damp shorts is how folliculitis and saddle sores start.

Wash after every ride, inside out, cool, without fabric softener, and dry away from direct heat, which destroys the elastane and the pad.

Saddle sores

Usually friction or blocked follicles. Rest, keep the area clean and dry, and see a doctor about anything that becomes hot, swollen or painful, since abscesses need treating.

Fit on the bike

Persistent numbness, hot spots or back pain means the position is wrong rather than the shorts. A proper bike fit is the single most effective purchase for anyone riding regularly.

Saddle width should match your sit bones, which most good shops will measure.

Building a kit

Two pairs of shorts so one is always clean and dry, a jersey with rear pockets, gloves, and a windproof layer that packs small. That covers most riding in most weather.

Replace shorts when the pad flattens or the fabric goes sheer, which happens well before they look worn out.

Layering for weather

A base layer that moves moisture, the jersey, and a packable windproof or waterproof. Cotton next to the skin holds sweat and chills you on a descent.

Arm and leg warmers cover a wide range of temperatures for very little bulk, and overshoes make winter riding bearable.

The saddle matters too

Persistent pain or numbness means the saddle or the fit is wrong, not that you need a thicker pad.
