Night Serums and Skin While You Sleep
What happens to skin overnight, what a night product can do, and sleep itself
Night-specific skincare is built on a real biological observation and a considerable amount of marketing on top of it, and the two are worth separating.
What actually happens overnight
Skin cell turnover and repair processes follow a daily rhythm, and transepidermal water loss is higher at night. That is established, and it is the reason night creams tend to be richer than day ones.
It does not mean a product works only after dark. What changes is that you are not wearing sunscreen or makeup over it.
What a night product can do
Deliver actives that are unsuitable for daytime — retinoids in particular, which increase sun sensitivity and degrade in light. Provide occlusion so skin loses less water overnight.
That is a genuine and modest job. The ingredients with evidence are the same ones that work at any time of day.
Reading the label
Look for a stated concentration of any active, and packaging that protects it from light and air. Ingredients are listed in descending order to one percent, so anything near the end is present in token amounts.
Sleep itself does more
Poor sleep is associated with slower barrier recovery, more visible signs of ageing and worse inflammatory skin conditions. Studies comparing good and poor sleepers find measurable differences.
A consistent wake time, a cool dark room and caffeine stopped by early afternoon change skin more reliably than any night serum.
Pillowcases
Silk or satin reduces friction against skin and hair, which is the most plausible of the claims made for them. Wash pillowcases weekly regardless.
Cost per use
Divide the price by the number of applications rather than comparing bottle prices, since serums vary enormously in how much you use each time.
Check the open-jar symbol for how long a product lasts once opened, and buy sizes you will finish within that.
What actually has evidence
Retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and daily sunscreen have the strongest research behind them, and all are available at every price point. Concentration and packaging matter more than the brand.
Give any product eight to twelve weeks before judging it, since skin turnover takes roughly that long.
Patch testing
Apply anything new to the inner forearm daily for several days rather than once, since delayed reactions are common.
Sunscreen does the heavy lifting
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen has more evidence for how skin ages than every night product combined, and it is what makes the rest of a routine worth doing.
Apply generously — around a third of a teaspoon for the face and neck — and reapply if you are outdoors.
Fragrance
One of the leading causes of contact allergy in cosmetics, and it appears in expensive products as often as cheap ones. Fragrance-free is the useful label for reactive skin.
The routine that works
Cleanse, one active, moisturiser at night; sunscreen every morning.
