Washing and Polishing a Car Properly

Why swirl marks happen, the two-bucket method, polishing and protection

Most paint damage on a well-kept car is inflicted while cleaning it, which is what the whole detailing approach exists to prevent.

Where swirl marks come from

Fine scratches from dragging grit across paint — sponges that hold dirt, dirty cloths, automatic car washes with stiff brushes, and washing in circles.

They show as a spider's web in direct sunlight and are polished out rather than washed off.

The two-bucket method

One bucket of shampoo and one of clean rinse water, both with grit guards. Rinse the mitt in the clean bucket after every panel so dirt goes to the bottom rather than back onto the car.

Rinse the car thoroughly first, work top down, use straight lines rather than circles, and use a microfibre mitt rather than a sponge.

Never wash in direct sun or on hot paint, which leaves water spots.

Drying

A large plush microfibre drying towel, patted or drawn gently rather than rubbed. A leather chamois drags grit.

Decontamination and polishing

A clay bar removes bonded contamination that washing leaves behind. Polishing removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to level out scratches, which is why it should be done sparingly.

Machine polishing is effective and can burn through clear coat on edges and thin panels. Start with the least aggressive pad and compound, and practise on a scrap panel.

Protection

Wax lasts weeks and gives depth. Synthetic sealants last months. Ceramic coatings last years, need meticulous preparation and do not make paint scratch-proof.

Interiors

Vacuum thoroughly including the seat rails, use a proper interior cleaner rather than household spray, and an enzyme cleaner for anything organic. Protect dashboards from sunlight, which cracks them over years.

Change the cabin filter, which is inexpensive and frequently never replaced.

Glass and wheels

Clean glass last with a dedicated glass cleaner and two cloths, one to apply and one to buff. Smearing is almost always residue from a polish or a dirty cloth rather than the cleaner.

Wheels get the dirtiest and should be cleaned first with separate brushes and buckets, since brake dust dragged onto paint scratches it.

Protecting the inside

Park in shade where you can and use a windscreen shade, since ultraviolet is what fades and cracks dashboards and seats.

Washing sensibly

Check local rules on washing a car on a driveway, since detergent running into a surface water drain goes to a watercourse rather than to treatment. Waterless and rinseless products use a fraction of the water.

A touchless automatic wash is gentler on paint than a brush one, and a decent hand wash is gentler than either.

Wheels and salt

Clean wheels first with separate equipment, and rinse salt off in winter, since it is what corrodes a car from underneath.
