Entrance Matting for a Business

Why matting matters, zones and length, logo mats and cleaning

Entrance matting is the least considered part of a building and one of the few that pays for itself. Most of the dirt and water entering a building comes through the door on feet.

Why it matters

Industry guidance suggests a large majority of dirt in a building is walked in, and removing it at the entrance costs far less than cleaning it off floors afterwards.

Wet floors are also the leading cause of slip injuries indoors, and slips are a substantial share of workplace injury claims.

Length is the specification that matters

A mat works by giving each foot several contacts. Guidance commonly suggests enough matting for six to eight footsteps, which is several metres rather than a single mat inside the door.

A short mat looks tidy and removes very little. This is the most common failing.

Three zones

A coarse scraper outside for heavy debris, an absorbent middle section inside to take water, and a finishing section to remove fine dust. Few buildings have all three and most would benefit.

Logo mats

Printed mats work as both branding and function, and print quality varies considerably. Check the fibre weight, whether the print is dyed into the fibre or surface printed, and whether the backing suits your floor.

Nitrile backing is more durable than vinyl and does not discolour vinyl flooring.

Safety

Mats must lie flat with no curling edges, since a curled mat is a trip hazard rather than a safety measure. Choose a bevelled edge and a backing that grips your floor type.

Specifying for the entrance

Measure the full width of the doorway and continue the matting past the swing of the door. A mat narrower than the entrance means people walk around it.

Recessed matting wells give the best result in a new build and are worth considering during design rather than afterwards.

Seasonal

Winter needs far more absorbent capacity than summer, and grit and salt destroy floors. Plan for a heavier specification during the wet months.

Buying or renting

Buying costs less over years and leaves you with the cleaning. A rental service swaps mats on a schedule and takes the laundry away, which suits businesses without a washing facility.

Compare the annual cost of each over three or four years over three or four years rather than the purchase price alone.

Cleaning and rotation

Vacuum daily in wet weather and wash on schedule. A saturated mat stops absorbing and starts transferring water back onto the floor.

A rental service with regular swaps removes the laundry problem entirely.
