Filter Bottles for Travel

What filters remove, what they do not, when you need one and maintenance

Filter bottles let you drink from sources you would otherwise avoid, and the specifications determine which sources those are. The distinctions matter for health.

The three classes of thing

Protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium are relatively large and removed by most filters. Bacteria are smaller and removed by a good filter. Viruses are far smaller and most filters do not remove them.

A filter described as a water purifier should remove all three, and that is the claim to look for if you are travelling where viral contamination is a risk.

Where each matters

In backcountry settings in developed countries, protozoa and bacteria are the usual concern and a filter is generally adequate. Where sanitation is poor, viral contamination is a real risk and a purifier or boiling is needed.

Check the specification against where you are actually going rather than buying on general claims.

What filters do not remove

Most do not remove dissolved chemicals, heavy metals, salt or nitrates unless they include a specific media for it. Carbon improves taste and chlorine and does not handle industrial contamination.

Maintenance

Filters clog and have a stated life in litres, not in time. Track usage rather than guessing, and replace on schedule, since an exhausted filter passes water through without treating it.

Keep the clean and dirty ends separate, dry the bottle between trips and never let a filter freeze, which cracks the internal structure invisibly.

Practical

Fill from the clearest water you can find, and let silty water settle first. Boiling remains the most reliable method where fuel is available.

Reducing single-use plastic

Refilling a bottle is the practical change here rather than the filter inside it. Many countries now have refill schemes and mapped public water points, which are free to use.

Stainless steel bottles last for years and keep drinks cold for hours, and they cannot be filtered, so choose according to what you actually need.

Hydration

Drink to thirst and check urine colour rather than following a fixed daily target. In heat, at altitude and during hard exercise, requirements rise considerably.

Travelling where water is unsafe

Also avoid ice, salad washed in tap water and drinks topped up from a tap. A filter bottle is part of the approach rather than the whole of it.

Take advice from a travel clinic before the trip, including about vaccinations and what to do if you become ill while away.

Everyday use

In countries where tap water is safe, a filter bottle is about taste and about not buying single-use plastic rather than about safety at all.
