Throw distance and brightness, light sources, screens and placement

A projector gives a far larger image than any television for the money, and the room decides whether that works.

Throw distance

The relationship between distance and image size is the throw ratio, and it determines whether a projector fits your room at all. A short-throw or ultra-short-throw model sits close to the wall; a long-throw model needs to be several metres back.

Measure the available distance first and choose from the models that fit it, rather than the other way round.

Brightness

Measured in lumens, and the figure that matters is ANSI lumens rather than a marketing number. A dedicated dark room works with around 2000; a living room with daylight needs considerably more.

No projector beats a television in a bright room, which is the honest limitation.

Light sources

Lamp projectors are cheapest and the lamp needs replacing after a few thousand hours. LED and laser sources last far longer, switch on instantly and cost more.

Factor in lamp replacement cost over the life of the projector.

Resolution and contrast

Contrast affects perceived quality more than resolution in a dark room. Check whether 4K is native or achieved by pixel shifting, which is common and not dishonest if stated.

Screens and placement

A proper screen improves the image considerably over a painted wall, and a grey screen helps in rooms with some ambient light. Check keystone and lens shift, since digital keystone correction reduces sharpness.

Sound

Built-in projector speakers are adequate for background and poor for films. A soundbar or a separate system does more for the experience than any increase in resolution.

Check the audio outputs and whether the projector passes sound through to a receiver.

Portable projectors

Battery models suit gardens and camping and are far dimmer, so they only work after dark. Check the real brightness rather than the marketing figure.

Maintenance

Keep the vents clear, clean the filter where one is fitted, and let the unit cool before moving it.

Placement and screens

Mounting on a ceiling gives a clean installation and makes adjustment harder. A shelf at the correct height and distance is easier to live with in most rooms.

Control the light before upgrading the projector — blackout blinds do more than a brighter model.

Buying

Check the noise level in decibels, the input lag if you game, and whether replacement lamps or filters are still available for the model.

Check the throw ratio against your room before comparing anything else.

Practicalities

Fan noise matters in a quiet film. Never look into the lens, particularly with laser models.
