Buying Luxury Fashion Online: A Practical Framework
Cost per wear, authentication and what actually holds its value
Luxury fashion is the category where the gap between a good purchase and a bad one is widest. The same amount of money can buy something worn hundreds of times over a decade, or something worn twice and resented. The difference is almost never the brand — it is which category you spend it in.
Cost per wear is the only honest metric
Divide the price by the number of times you will realistically wear it. A coat worn four times a week for five winters costs very little per wear even at a serious price. An evening piece worn twice a year does not, regardless of how reasonable the ticket looked.
Apply this before buying rather than afterwards. It reliably redirects spending towards outerwear, bags and shoes, and away from the statement pieces that feel exciting in a shop and sit unworn at home.
Where the craftsmanship is actually visible
Outerwear, leather goods and footwear. These are the categories where construction differences show up in how something wears over years — a lined coat that holds its shape, a bag whose stitching does not loosen, shoes that can be resoled.
In simple garments like t-shirts and basic knitwear, the gap between luxury and good mid-market narrows considerably. You are paying substantially for the label, which is a legitimate choice but should be a conscious one.
Sizing across houses
Italian, French, UK and US sizing do not convert cleanly, and they are inconsistent within a single house across product lines. Always work from the measurement chart in centimetres rather than the size label.
For structured pieces, shoulder width is the measurement that decides everything. Sleeves shorten easily and a waist takes in readily; shoulders are difficult and sometimes impossible to alter.
Authentication and paperwork
Buy from authorised stockists and check what arrives with the item — original tags, dust bag, authenticity card and serial where applicable. Their presence is reassurance; their absence is a question worth asking before you pay.
Pay by a method that offers a chargeback route. Check with your card issuer about dispute eligibility, deadlines and any fees.
Care protects the investment
Dry cleaning is far harsher than most people assume, and frequent cleaning shortens the life of tailoring and knitwear considerably. Air garments after wearing, spot clean where possible, and dry clean only when genuinely needed — typically once or twice a season for a coat.
Store knitwear folded rather than hung, since hanging stretches the shoulders permanently. Use broad wooden or padded hangers for tailoring; wire hangers deform a shoulder line within months.
Before you order
Check the returns window and whether sale stock is final. Check where the item ships from, since cross-border orders often attract import duty charged to you on arrival, which can add substantially to a price you thought you had compared properly.
