Setting Up a Home Gym

What to buy first, flooring and ceiling height, safety when training alone

Home gym equipment is bought enthusiastically and used inconsistently, and the equipment that gets used is the equipment that suits the space and the training you will actually do.

Buy in order of usefulness

Adjustable dumbbells or a set of kettlebells cover an enormous range of training in very little space. A barbell, plates and a rack come next, and only if you have the room and intend to lift heavy.

Machines take space and do one thing each. For most people, free weights and bodyweight cover far more for far less.

Check the space properly

Ceiling height for overhead pressing and for standing on a bench or box. Floor loading, particularly upstairs or in a converted loft. Width for a barbell, which is longer than people assume.

Measure the route in as well as the room, since racks and benches arrive heavy and boxed.

Flooring

Rubber matting protects the floor, reduces noise for anyone below and stops equipment sliding. It matters most under a rack and wherever weights are set down.

Training alone is the safety issue

Without a spotter, never bench press with the bar over your throat or chest unless the rack has safety arms or pins set at the right height. Test them empty before loading.

Use collars on the bar, or deliberately train without them so a failed lift can be dumped safely — but decide which and be consistent.

Keep a phone within reach and tell someone when you are training.

Technique first

A few sessions with a qualified coach at the start prevents habits that take years to undo and cause most training injuries.

Buying second-hand

Weights do not wear out, and the used market is full of barely used equipment sold within a year. Check bars for bends and rust and benches for a solid frame and intact padding.

Collect it yourself, since delivery on heavy equipment frequently costs more than the item.

Noise and neighbours

Dropping weights transmits through a building structure far more than people realise. Rubber matting, lowering rather than dropping, and training at reasonable hours prevent most complaints.

Programming

A simple programme followed consistently beats a complicated one abandoned in three weeks. Progressive overload — adding a little weight or a repetition over time — is what produces results.

Warm up properly and leave a day between hard sessions for the same muscle groups.

Making it get used

Somewhere visible and set up ready to use, since every step between deciding and starting reduces the chance it happens.

Speak to a doctor first if you have a heart condition or have been inactive for a long period.
