Hearing Aids You Can Buy Without a Prescription

Hearing devices are now available to buy directly in several countries, which has made help far more accessible. One step comes first, and skipping it is where people go wrong.

Have your hearing tested

A hearing test identifies the type and degree of loss and rules out causes that need treatment rather than amplification — earwax, infection, a perforated eardrum, or a benign growth.

Sudden hearing loss in one ear is a medical emergency and needs urgent assessment, since treatment is time-critical. Hearing loss on one side only, ringing in one ear, dizziness, pain or discharge all need a doctor rather than a device.

What over-the-counter devices are for

In the United States, a regulated category of over-the-counter hearing aids exists for adults with perceived mild to moderate loss. They are genuine hearing aids rather than amplifiers, and rules differ by country.

They are not suitable for children, for severe loss, or for anyone with the warning signs above.

Amplifiers are not hearing aids

Personal sound amplification products make everything louder without shaping the sound to your specific loss. Most hearing loss affects some frequencies more than others, which is why a hearing aid fitted to an audiogram works and a simple amplifier frequently does not.

Fitting and adjustment

Try the different ear tip sizes supplied, since a poor seal causes whistling and poor sound. Most devices have an app-based setup that adjusts to a hearing test.

Expect an adjustment period of weeks. Your own voice and everyday sounds will seem loud at first, and this settles.

Cost and alternatives

Prices range enormously, and in several countries hearing aids are provided free or subsidised through the health system after an assessment. Check what you are entitled to before buying privately.

Audiologist-fitted aids cost more and include fitting, adjustment and follow-up, which is much of what makes them work.

Protecting the hearing you have

Noise-induced loss is permanent and preventable. Use hearing protection with power tools, at concerts and on noisy sites, and keep headphone volume moderate.

If your ears ring after an event, that was too loud.

Living with them

Wear them consistently rather than only in difficult situations, since the brain needs weeks of regular input to adapt. Part-time use is why people conclude they do not work.

Tell family and colleagues, and ask people to face you when speaking rather than calling from another room.

Care

Clean daily as instructed, keep them dry, and remove batteries or charge as directed. See a professional if you get no benefit after a fair trial.

Untreated hearing loss is associated with social withdrawal and cognitive decline, which is why addressing it matters.
