Momme weight in clothing, why silk suits sleep, washing and packing it

Silk sleepwear is bought for how it feels and has practical properties that explain why it has never been improved on for the purpose.

Momme in clothing

Momme measures the weight of silk. Sleepwear typically runs from 16 to 22 momme — lighter than that is sheer and wears through quickly, heavier is more durable and less fluid.

Around 19 momme is the usual balance for pyjamas and slips, and mulberry silk with a stated grade such as 6A indicates longer, more uniform fibres.

Why it suits sleeping

Silk regulates temperature unusually well, feeling cool in summer and retaining warmth in winter, because the fibre structure traps air while allowing moisture to escape.

It absorbs less moisture than cotton, so it does not draw as much from the skin and does not stay damp against you.

The smooth surface also creates far less friction against hair and skin than cotton, which is the most plausible of the beauty claims made for it.

Washing it

Hand wash cool or use a delicate cycle in a mesh bag with a detergent made for silk or a mild shampoo. Never biological detergent, which contains enzymes that digest protein fibres.

Do not wring. Roll in a towel and dry flat away from sunlight and radiators, and iron on the lowest setting on the reverse while slightly damp.

What damages it

Perfume, deodorant, alcohol, chlorine and sunlight. Apply anything scented and let it dry before dressing, since alcohol marks silk permanently.

Packing it

Silk is light, takes almost no space and creases less than cotton, which makes it genuinely practical for travel. Hanging it in a steamy bathroom removes most travel creases.

Silk pillowcases

The most common entry point, and the claim with the most behind it is reduced friction against hair, which means less breakage and less frizz overnight.

Have two so one is always available while the other is washed, and wash weekly like any pillowcase.

Cost per use

Silk is expensive and lasts for years with correct washing. Work out the cost across several years rather than comparing against cotton at purchase.

Buying sensibly

Check the momme weight and whether the silk is mulberry with a stated grade. A very cheap silk garment is usually low momme and will wear through at the seams within a season.

Satin is a weave rather than a fibre, so a satin item may be polyester — check the composition field.

Sizing

Silk has no stretch, so work from the garment measurements laid flat rather than a size letter.
