Sleeping Cool on a Mattress
Why foam traps heat, hybrid construction, bedding and room temperature
Sleeping hot is one of the most common complaints about modern mattresses, and the cause is usually the construction rather than the room.
Why foam retains heat
Solid memory foam contours closely, which increases the contact area with your body and restricts airflow. Heat then has nowhere to go, which is exactly what makes it feel supportive.
Open-cell foam, gel infusion and ventilated layers all help, and none of them changes the underlying physics entirely.
Hybrid construction
A pocket-sprung core with a comfort layer of foam on top allows air to move through the springs. That is the most effective structural answer to sleeping hot while keeping the feel of foam.
Latex is naturally more open and runs cooler than memory foam, and it costs more.
The bedding matters as much
A thick mattress protector, particularly a waterproof one, can undo everything the mattress does. Look for a breathable protector rather than a plastic-backed one.
Natural fibres — cotton percale, linen, wool — manage moisture far better than polyester. Tog describes duvet warmth, and a warmer duvet in a warm room is the most common cause of overheating.
Room temperature
Around sixteen to nineteen degrees suits most adults, which is cooler than most bedrooms are kept. Core body temperature needs to fall for sleep to begin, which is why a hot room delays it.
Sleeping hot for other reasons
Menopause, some medications, alcohol and thyroid conditions all affect night-time temperature. Persistent night sweats that soak bedding warrant a doctor rather than a new mattress.
Mattress protectors and toppers
A cooling topper can improve a mattress that is otherwise fine, and it adds height so check your fitted sheets still fit. A topper cannot fix a sagging mattress.
Rotate the mattress as the manufacturer specifies and check whether it is single sided, since many should not be flipped.
Airing the bed
Fold the duvet back each morning rather than making the bed immediately, which lets moisture escape from the mattress rather than trapping it.
Firmness and position
Side sleepers generally need more give at the shoulder and hip; back and front sleepers firmer support. Heavier people sink further into the same mattress and usually need firmer.
The old advice that back pain needs a very firm mattress is not supported by the evidence, and medium-firm performs at least as well in most studies.
When to replace
Most mattresses last seven to ten years. Waking stiff, visible dipping, or sleeping better away from home are the practical signs.
Before buying
Use the sleep trial, give it two to four weeks for adaptation, and check who pays for collection on a return.
