Garden Storage and Sheds
Materials compared, base and foundations, security and what to store
Garden storage fails in two predictable ways — water gets in from underneath, and the contents are stolen. Both are decided before anything is assembled.
The base matters more than the shed
A shed on bare soil or grass rots from the floor up and moves as the ground shifts. A level base of paving slabs, concrete or a purpose-made frame is what determines whether it lasts.
Raise timber off the ground and allow airflow underneath. This single step prevents most shed failures.
Materials
Timber looks best, can be repaired and needs treating regularly. Metal is secure, needs no treatment and suffers from condensation unless ventilated.
Plastic and resin need no maintenance, do not rot, and become brittle with ultraviolet exposure over years. Check for UV stabilisation.
Condensation
A sealed metal or plastic store fills with condensation and rusts whatever is inside. Ventilation is what prevents that, and blocking vents to keep water out makes it worse.
Security
Standard hasps and padlocks on a shed are defeated in seconds. Use a closed-shackle padlock, fit the hasp with coach bolts rather than screws, and consider replacing the supplied hinges.
Check what your insurance says about items in outbuildings, since cover is frequently capped low and may require a specific lock.
What not to store
Petrol, gas cylinders and large quantities of flammable liquid should not be in a shed attached to a house or near a boundary. Check local rules and keep quantities minimal.
Lithium batteries, including from bikes and tools, should not be charged in an unattended outbuilding.
Organising the space
Get things off the floor with wall tracks, hooks and shelving, since vertical space is almost always underused. Store anything heavy low down and anything used often at waist height, where it can be reached without moving something else.
Keep a clear route to the door and resist stacking things in front of it, which is how sheds become unusable.
Garden furniture storage
Cushions must come indoors or into a sealed box, since cushions are the part that fails first whatever the frame is made of. Clean and dry furniture before storing it for winter.
Planning permission and boundaries
Size, height and position relative to boundaries are usually within permitted development up to defined limits, and those limits vary by country and by property. Check before building anything substantial.
Leave access around a shed for maintenance and treatment rather than pushing it hard against a fence.
Planning
Size and siting are usually permitted development within limits, and those limits vary. Check before building anything substantial.
