Buying Fragrance From Discounters
Why prices differ, spotting a fake, batch codes and storage
Fragrance sells at wildly different prices for the same bottle, and most of the variation is legitimate. Knowing where the genuine savings come from also shows where the risk is.
Why discounters are cheaper
Parallel imports, end-of-line stock, discontinued packaging and bulk buying across markets. None of that affects the liquid, which is why the saving is real.
Tester bottles are identical juice in plain packaging, usually without a cap, and are considerably cheaper.
What a fake looks like
Counterfeits have improved and the packaging is where they still fail. Check the cellophane, which should be neatly sealed rather than loose. Check print quality, the alignment of the label and the weight of the glass and cap.
The spray should be a fine even mist. A coarse or spitting atomiser is a bad sign.
The scent itself is the clearest test — fakes tend to smell sharply of alcohol, fade within an hour and lack any development.
Batch codes
Genuine bottles carry a batch code printed or etched on both the box and the bottle, and the two should match. Online checkers will tell you the production date from it.
A missing code, or codes that differ between box and bottle, is a warning sign.
Concentration
Eau de toilette and eau de parfum of the same name are different compositions rather than the same thing diluted. Compare like with like when comparing prices.
Buy small first
Fragrance develops differently on every person, and a bottle you dislike is money gone. Decants and samples cost a fraction and are the only sensible way to buy something unworn.
Applying it
Two sprays at the neck and wrists, where warmth develops the scent, and do not rub the wrists together, which breaks down the top notes.
Moisturised skin holds fragrance longer than dry skin, so an unscented lotion underneath extends it by hours.
Building a small collection
Three or four fragrances covering day, evening, summer and winter is enough for almost anyone. Heat amplifies projection considerably, so what works in January can be overwhelming in July.
Concentration and price
Parfum strength carries the most oil and lasts longest, so the cost per wearing is frequently lower even when the bottle costs more. Eau de toilette suits daytime and warm weather.
Work out the price per millilitre when comparing sizes, since larger bottles are usually better value if you will finish them.
Storage
Light and heat degrade fragrance. Keep bottles in the box in a drawer; a bathroom shelf is the worst common place.
Pay by card for the chargeback route and keep the packaging until you are satisfied.
