Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto Adapters
What they do, compatibility, distraction and the law
An adapter turns a wired phone-mirroring system into a wireless one, which removes the cable and introduces a few things worth knowing.
What they do
The adapter plugs into the car's USB port, presents itself as a phone, and then connects to your actual phone over wifi and Bluetooth. The car does not know the difference.
That extra hop is why connection can take longer than a cable and why an occasional dropout happens.
Compatibility
The car must already support wired CarPlay or Android Auto — an adapter cannot add it to a car that has neither. Check your model and year, and check the adapter's list rather than assuming.
Some adapters also add streaming apps, which many manufacturers disable and which may play video.
Distraction and the law
Video playback where a driver can see it is prohibited in the UK and most of Europe. Using a handheld phone while driving is an offence, and the law applies to any device that distracts you, including a screen in the dashboard.
Set the route and the playlist before moving, and pull over to change anything that takes more than a glance.
Practical points
The adapter draws power continuously and can stay awake after the car is switched off on some vehicles, which drains a battery over days. Unplug it if the car stands unused.
Keep the firmware updated, since most reliability issues are fixed in updates.
Heat
Wireless mirroring plus wireless charging makes a phone hot, and heat is what degrades a battery fastest.
Getting good results
Pair the phone once properly, keep both the phone and the adapter updated, and expect a connection delay of ten to thirty seconds at start-up. Turning the phone's wifi on before starting helps.
If it drops repeatedly, the usual causes are a weak phone battery saver setting or a crowded wifi environment.
Phone mounts
With wireless mirroring the phone can stay in a pocket, which removes the mount question entirely and keeps the windscreen clear.
Using the system well
Set navigation and music before moving, use voice control rather than the screen, and keep notifications limited while driving. Glancing at a screen for two seconds at motorway speed covers a considerable distance blind.
Mount any physical phone holder where it does not obscure the view, which is an offence in many countries.
Check the adapter is compatible with your exact model year rather than the model name.
Unplug the adapter if the car will stand unused for a week or more.
Buying
