Portable Air Conditioners for Tents and Vans

Why venting matters, BTU and power, batteries and cooling without one

A genuine portable air conditioner moves heat from one place to another, which is the point most buyers miss. Understanding that explains almost everything about using one.

Air conditioners must vent heat somewhere

Cooling a space means extracting heat and expelling it outside. An air conditioner without an exhaust duct running outside the space adds heat to the room rather than removing it.

That is the fundamental difference between an air conditioner and an evaporative cooler, which adds moisture to the air instead and works only in dry climates.

BTU and space

Cooling capacity is quoted in BTU per hour. A small tent or van needs far less than a room, and an undersized unit runs constantly without ever catching up.

Insulation matters as much as capacity. A thin tent in direct sun cannot be cooled effectively by anything portable.

Power is the real constraint

These draw substantial current. Work out consumption in watt hours and compare it against your battery capacity, remembering that a compressor unit running for hours will empty most portable power stations.

Check the starting surge, since compressors draw several times their running wattage momentarily.

Condensate and safety

Units produce water that must drain somewhere. Check whether it is self-evaporating or needs a tank emptied.

Never run a fuel-burning generator inside or near a sleeping space, since carbon monoxide is odourless and kills. Ventilation is not a substitute for keeping it outside and well away.

Sleeping in heat

Ventilation across the space matters more than raw cooling. Open vents at both ends to create airflow, and a fan moving air over skin cools a person effectively for a fraction of the power.

Damp cloths, cold water and hydration all help, and alcohol makes heat considerably worse.

Heat safety

Recognise heat exhaustion — dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, cramps — and get into shade and rehydrate. Confusion, hot dry skin or collapse is heatstroke and a medical emergency.

Never leave children or animals in a vehicle in warm weather, even briefly.

Noise

Compressor units are audible and run intermittently through the night, which matters in a tent or a van where you are a metre away. Check the stated decibel level rather than the marketing description.

Alternatives

A 12 volt fan, reflective window covers, an awning for shade and choosing a shaded pitch cost a fraction and solve a good deal of the problem.

Cheaper approaches

Shade first, since preventing heat entering beats removing it. Reflective covers, parking in shade, ventilation across the space at night and a good fan do a great deal for very little power.
