Strapless, backless and adhesive options, fit, and what actually holds

Specialty bras exist because ordinary ones show, and the reason most of them slip is the same reason ordinary bras fail — the band.

The band does the work

With a strapless bra there is nothing else. Around eighty percent of support normally comes from the band, and without straps it is all of it, which is why a strapless bra must be firmer than your usual one.

Many people go down a band size and up a cup for strapless styles. A band riding up at the back is the reason it slides down.

Strapless

Look for silicone gripping along the top and bottom edges, a wide band and proper boning at the sides. Moulded cups hold their shape better than soft ones.

Try it on and move — raise your arms, sit down, bend forward. Anything that shifts in a changing room will shift all evening.

Backless and low-back

Low-back converters clip onto the existing band and drop it to the waist, which keeps the support of a proper bra under a backless dress. These are inexpensive and underused.

Adhesive and stick-on

These lift and shape rather than support, so they suit smaller busts and light fabrics. Skin must be completely clean and free of moisturiser or oil, which is why they fail.

Patch test the adhesive, since reactions happen, and do not use them on broken or sunburnt skin.

Nipple covers and tape

Fabric tape is safer on skin than duct tape, which should never be used. Remove adhesive slowly with oil rather than pulling.

Buying for an outfit

Take the dress or top to the fitting where you can, since the neckline determines everything. Many shops will let you try underwear with your own garment over it.

Order early enough to exchange, since specialty bras are the items most often wrong first time.

Comfort over an evening

A strapless bra that is comfortable standing in a shop is a different thing from one worn for eight hours. Wear it around the house for an hour first.

The fit checks

The wire flat against the ribcage encircling all the tissue, the centre panel flat against the sternum, and nothing spilling at the top or the side. Those apply to specialty bras as much as to everyday ones.

Fasten a new bra on the loosest hook so there is room to tighten as the elastic stretches.

Care

Hand wash adhesive bras as directed and let the adhesive air dry, which restores tack.
