Smart Kettles and Temperature Control

Why temperature matters, what smart adds, descaling and energy use

A kettle that holds a set temperature is genuinely useful for some drinks and unnecessary for others, and the connected features are a separate question.

Temperature matters for tea

Black tea and herbal infusions want water just off the boil. Green tea wants around 70 to 80 degrees, and white tea cooler still, because boiling water scorches the leaf and produces bitterness.

Coffee wants around 92 to 96 degrees. That is the practical argument for a variable temperature kettle rather than a smart one.

What connectivity adds

Starting it from another room or a phone, scheduling it and seeing whether it is on. Useful for some households and genuinely marginal for most, since somebody still has to have filled it.

Check the kettle works fully from its own controls if the app or the internet fails, which is the question that matters most.

Boiling only what you need

A kettle is one of the higher-draw appliances in a house, and boiling a full kettle for one cup wastes a meaningful amount over a year. Fill to the cup markings.

Keeping water hot for long periods costs more than reboiling, so use a flask if you want hot water available.

Descaling

Limescale insulates the element and makes a kettle slower and less efficient. Descale monthly in a hard water area with a proper descaler or white vinegar, rinsing thoroughly afterwards.

A filter jug reduces scale and improves the taste of both tea and coffee.

Safety

Keep the flex short and out of reach of children, and never place a kettle near the edge of a worktop. Scalds from kettles are among the most common household burns involving children.

Water quality

In hard water areas a filter jug reduces scale and noticeably improves the taste of tea and coffee. Very soft water can taste flat, so it is worth trying both.

Empty and refill the kettle rather than reboiling the same water repeatedly, which concentrates minerals.

Buying

Check the minimum fill level, since a kettle that will not boil one cup defeats the point, and check how easy the limescale filter is to remove and rinse.

Making tea properly

Warm the pot, use fresh water rather than reboiled, and give the leaf the time it needs. Loose leaf in a large infuser beats a cramped ball, since the leaves need room to expand.

Take the water off the boil for green and white tea, both of which scorch and turn bitter.

Buying

Check the noise level, the fill markings and whether the lid opens wide enough to clean inside.
