Buying Jeans That Actually Fit
Rise and waist gap, stretch content, sizing between brands and alterations
Jeans are the garment most people own several ill-fitting pairs of, and the problem is almost always the rise or the gap at the back rather than the size.
Rise decides everything
The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband. High rise sits at the natural waist, mid rise below it, low rise on the hips. A rise that does not match your torso will never sit right whatever the size.
People with a shorter torso frequently find high rise digs in; people with a longer one find mid rise gapes and slides down.
The waist gap
A gap at the back with a fitting waist at the front means the jeans are cut for a smaller difference between waist and hip than yours. Curve-cut ranges exist for exactly this and are the real answer.
Otherwise a tailor can take the waistband in for very little, which is the single most worthwhile jeans alteration.
Stretch content
Check the composition. Around one to three percent elastane gives comfort and recovery. Above five percent and the jeans feel like leggings and bag at the knee within a day.
Rigid denim with no stretch moulds to you over months and is unforgiving at first. Neither is better; they behave differently.
Sizing between brands
Numbering is not standardised and a size varies considerably between labels and between a brand's own ranges. Measure a pair that fits well, laid flat, and compare against the stated measurements.
Trying them on
Sit down, squat and walk. Jeans relax with wear, so a pair that is comfortable in a changing room may be loose by the afternoon.
Plus-size fit specifically
Ranges cut on a plus block rather than graded up from a smaller one fit considerably better, particularly through the thigh and the waist-to-hip ratio. Look for brands that say which they do.
Check the inside leg, since many ranges offer only one length and a hem is an easy alteration.
Buying online
Work from the stated garment measurements rather than the size label. Order two sizes if you are between and return one, which is cheaper than owning a pair you never wear.
Denim washes and styles
Dark rinse denim is the most versatile and the most forgiving, and it transfers dye onto pale furniture and bags for the first few washes. Wash separately at first.
Straight and wide legs suit most body shapes and have returned to the mainstream, and skinny jeans with high stretch are the ones that bag fastest.
Care
Wash cool, inside out, and infrequently. Air dry rather than tumble drying, which is what shrinks and degrades them.
