Hair Removal Methods Compared
Shaving, waxing, epilation, creams and laser, ingrown hairs and skin tone
Every hair removal method trades speed, cost, pain and how long the result lasts, and none of them is best for everyone.
Shaving
Fast, cheap, painless and lasts a day or two, since it cuts the hair at the surface rather than removing it. It does not make hair grow back thicker — the blunt cut end simply feels coarser.
Shave in a warm shower after a few minutes, with a sharp blade and a lubricating product, and replace blades before they drag.
Waxing and sugaring
Removes hair from the root, so regrowth takes three to six weeks. It hurts, needs a few millimetres of growth to work, and causes temporary redness.
Avoid waxing skin using retinoids or recently exfoliated, since the top layer lifts with the wax.
Epilators
Mechanical plucking with the same result as waxing, at home, repeatedly. Uncomfortable at first and considerably less so with regular use.
Creams
Chemical depilatories dissolve the hair at the surface. They suit people who react to blades and are a common cause of chemical burns when left on too long — patch test and follow the timing exactly.
Laser and IPL
Reduce hair over a course of sessions by targeting pigment. They work best on dark hair and pale skin, and professional laser with the right wavelength is safer and more effective on darker skin than home IPL, which many devices are not suitable for.
Choosing a method
Match it to how often you want to think about it. Shaving suits daily maintenance, waxing suits people happy to grow hair out between appointments, and light-based devices suit anyone willing to commit to a course over months.
Cost over a year tells you more than the price of the product, since blades, wax and salon appointments add up.
Skin care around it
Moisturise afterwards, avoid heat, swimming pools and strong sun for a day after waxing or light treatment, and leave a few days between exfoliating and hair removal.
Stop any method that causes persistent irritation rather than pushing through it.
Medical points
Some medications increase light sensitivity, and a few conditions rule out particular methods. Tell any practitioner what you take, and see a doctor about sudden excess hair growth, which can have a treatable cause.
At home or in a salon
Home devices are cheaper over time and deliver less energy per session, so results take longer and a course must be kept up. A salon costs more and has trained operators, proper machines and a consultation.
Ask what device a salon uses, what training the operator holds and whether a patch test is done, which it should be.
Ingrown hairs
Exfoliate gently, do not dig them out, and see a doctor about anything painful or infected.
