Pickup Canopies and Carrying Loads Safely

Hardtops and covers, payload and weight limits, securing a load and legal points

A canopy changes what a pickup can carry and does not change the weight it is allowed to carry, which is where most owners come unstuck.

Gross vehicle weight is stated on the plate, and payload is that figure minus the kerb weight. Accessories — a hardtop, a liner, a towbar, a roof rack — all come out of the payload before any cargo does.

Overloading affects braking and handling, invalidates insurance and is an offence. Weigh the loaded vehicle at a public weighbridge rather than estimating.

Hardtops and covers

A hardtop gives a lockable dry space and adds weight and height. Roller covers and soft tonneaus weigh less and secure less. Check the height against car parks, barriers and your garage.

Confirm the canopy is designed for your model and bed length, and whether any load rating applies to the roof.

Securing a load

An unsecured load can move under braking with enormous force. Use rated straps and lashing points rather than rope, tighten them, and check again after the first few miles.

Anything overhanging must be marked, and there are legal limits on projection. Loose items in an open bed are a hazard to everyone behind you.

Visibility and towing

A canopy obscures the rear view, so mirrors and reversing sensors matter more. Check the towing capacity and the noseweight limit, which are separate from payload.

Ventilation

Never allow anyone to travel in a covered load bed, and never sleep in one with any fuel-burning appliance, since carbon monoxide has no smell and kills.

Tools and theft

Tools left in a vehicle overnight are a well-known target, and many insurance policies exclude them or cap cover severely. Empty the vehicle where you can and mark everything.

Check what your policy says before relying on a lock.

Choosing a canopy

Decide whether you need full standing-height access, side windows, roof bars or a simple lockable cover, since those lead to very different products. Check it can be removed if you ever need an open bed.

Confirm fitting is included and whether the vehicle needs drilling, which affects resale and any warranty.

Load and fuel

A canopy adds weight and changes aerodynamics, which affects fuel consumption noticeably at motorway speeds. Empty the bed when you do not need the load.

Security

A hardtop with a central locking kit and a lockable tailgate handle is considerably more secure than a soft cover. Nothing is secure enough to leave valuables in overnight.

Photograph and record serial numbers of anything carried regularly, and mark tools.

Maintenance

Check the seals and drainage channels, since water sitting in a bed rusts it from the inside. Wash salt off in winter.

Practical

Check whether the vehicle's classification for tax and insurance changes with modifications.
