Tablet Cases, Keyboards and Working From One

What a case should do, keyboards and stands, styluses and what a tablet suits

A tablet becomes a working device or stays a consumption device depending almost entirely on the accessories around it.

What a case should do

Cover the corners, raise a lip above the screen and the camera, and hold the device at a usable angle. Drops land on corners, which is where unprotected tablets crack.

Folio cases protect the screen and add weight. Sleeves protect in a bag and not in use. Check whether the case allows charging and any magnetic attachment.

Keyboards

A case keyboard makes a tablet workable for email and documents and is cramped for long writing. A separate Bluetooth keyboard with a stand is more comfortable and less portable.

Check the key travel and whether there is a trackpad, since reaching up to a screen repeatedly is tiring and imprecise.

Stands and posture

A tablet flat on a table forces the neck down. Raise it to eye level with a stand and use a separate keyboard, which is the single change that makes long sessions bearable.

Styluses

Active styluses with pressure sensitivity suit drawing and handwriting; cheap capacitive ones do not. Check compatibility with the specific model, since these are rarely interchangeable.

A matte screen protector gives a paper-like feel and slightly softens the display.

What a tablet suits

Reading, drawing, notes, video calls and light document work. For long writing, spreadsheets and multitasking, a laptop is faster and less frustrating.

Children and tablets

A thick rubber case designed for drops, a screen protector and parental controls set on the account rather than the device. Check the content and spending settings after any system update.

Agree where and when it is used rather than counting minutes, and keep it out of bedrooms at night.

Cleaning

A barely damp microfibre cloth rather than a spray, and never an alcohol wipe on an oleophobic screen coating.

Leather cases

Leather wears at the corners and develops a patina, which some people prefer and which offers less impact protection than a rubberised case. Condition it occasionally and keep it out of prolonged heat.

Check the case does not interfere with wireless charging or magnetic attachment.

Buying a tablet

Storage cannot usually be expanded, so buy more than you think if you keep photographs or offline video. Check the screen size against how you will actually use it, since a large tablet is heavy to hold for reading.

Cellular models cost more and are useful only if you genuinely work away from wifi.

Longevity

Check how many years of software updates the model will receive, since that determines how long it stays safe to use.
