Booking Theatre Tickets Well
Where to buy, seat choice, cheap ways in and what resale rules mean
Theatre tickets vary enormously in price for the same show on the same night, and most of the difference comes from where and when you buy rather than from the seat.
Buy from an authorised source
The theatre's own box office, the producer's official site or a member of an authorised ticket agents' association. These sell at face value plus a stated booking fee.
Secondary sites resell tickets at whatever the market bears and appear high in search results. In the UK, resale listings must state the seat details and the original face value, so check both.
A ticket bought on a site that cannot tell you the row and seat number is a risk.
Choosing seats
For big musicals, the front of the dress circle frequently beats the rear stalls at the same price, since you see the whole stage picture. For intimate plays, close stalls seats win.
Check seating plans with restricted view notes, and remember overhangs from the circle cut sightlines in the rear stalls.
Cheaper ways in
Day seats released each morning, digital lotteries, standing tickets, preview performances before opening night, and midweek matinees. These are consistently the cheapest legitimate routes.
Under-thirty and student schemes exist at many theatres and are widely unused.
Fees
Compare the total at checkout rather than the ticket price, since booking, transaction and delivery fees vary considerably between sellers for identical seats.
Access
Most theatres offer access schemes with companion tickets and adapted seating, arranged in advance through a dedicated line.
Planning the evening
Check the running time and whether there is an interval, since some plays run straight through. Book anything to eat beforehand rather than assuming, particularly in theatre districts on a Saturday.
Check the last train home before booking an evening performance a long way from home.
If something goes wrong
Tickets bought from an authorised seller are usually refunded or exchanged if a performance is cancelled. Secondary purchases frequently are not, which is another argument for buying officially.
Getting more from it
Read nothing about the plot beforehand if you can help it, since surprise is most of what live theatre offers. Programmes are sold on the night and cast changes are posted at the door.
Regional theatres and touring productions cost a fraction of West End prices for the same show, frequently with the original creative team.
Taking children
Check the recommended age rather than assuming, and consider a matinee. Many theatres run relaxed performances designed for audiences who need a less restrictive environment.
On the night
Arrive early enough to be seated, since latecomers are frequently held until a suitable break.
