Counterfeits and how to spot them, grey market stock, batch codes and reactions
Cosmetics are among the most counterfeited consumer goods, and the fakes are far better made than they used to be.
Why it matters
Seized counterfeit cosmetics have been found containing banned substances, heavy metals and bacterial contamination. These products are made with no safety assessment, which is the whole point of the regulations they bypass.
A product used daily on skin, or near eyes and lips, is not the place to gamble on provenance.
How to spot them
Price well below the market, sellers with no verifiable address, packaging with spelling errors, poor print quality, a batch code that does not match between box and product, and a texture or smell that differs from one you know.
Buy from the brand, an authorised stockist or an established retailer, and be careful on marketplaces and social media.
Grey market stock
Genuine products imported outside official channels are legal to sell and may be old, stored badly or intended for another market with different labelling. Check the batch code against the brand's dating.
Batch codes and dates
Every cosmetic carries a batch code, and the open-jar symbol states how many months it lasts once opened. Products past that, or that have separated, changed colour or smell, should be discarded.
Sample sizes and sets
Gift sets and minis are a low-risk way to try expensive products, and check the dates, since sets frequently contain older stock. Work out the price per millilitre rather than comparing box prices.
Discontinued lines appear cheaply and may be years old.
Storage at home
Cool, dark and sealed. A sunny windowsill or a steamy bathroom degrades actives within months, and heat is what separates emulsions.
Hygiene
Wash brushes weekly, clean sponges after every use, and never share eye or lip products.
Returns and rights
Distance selling gives a cancellation period for most goods bought online, and sealed cosmetics opened after delivery may be exempt for hygiene reasons. Faulty or misdescribed goods remain covered regardless.
Pay by a method offering protection, particularly on a seller you do not know.
Using it up
Most bathrooms contain several half-used products that will expire first. Buying smaller and finishing things costs less than any discount.
Check the seller has a verifiable address before ordering from an unfamiliar site.
Photograph anything that arrives looking wrong before opening it fully.
Keep the batch code, which is what a brand asks for when verifying a product.
Reactions
Stop using anything that causes burning, swelling or a spreading rash, keep the packaging, and see a doctor if it persists.
Report suspected counterfeits to the brand and to trading standards.
