Belt Drives and E-Bike Maintenance
Belt versus chain, hub and mid motors, servicing and winter care
Electric bikes are ridden further and in worse weather than ordinary bikes, which makes the drivetrain choice a practical one rather than a technical preference.
Belt drive and chain
A carbon belt runs clean, needs no lubrication, does not rust and lasts considerably longer than a chain. It requires a frame with a split in the rear triangle and works only with hub gears or a single speed.
Chains are cheaper, repairable anywhere and work with derailleurs. They need cleaning and lubricating, and road salt destroys them.
For commuting in all weather with low maintenance, a belt and hub gear is the better arrangement.
Hub and mid motors
Hub motors are simple, quiet and put no load on the drivetrain, which pairs well with a belt. Mid motors drive through the gears, climb better and wear chains and sprockets faster.
Belt tension
Belts need correct tension — too loose and they skip, too tight and they wear bearings. Manufacturers specify it and some provide an app or a tension gauge. It is not a guess.
What still needs servicing
Brake pads and discs, tyres, bearings, and the battery and its connections. Electric bikes are heavy and fast, so brakes and tyres wear faster than on an ordinary bike.
Check the chain or belt line, the torque on the motor mounting and the spokes periodically.
Battery care
Use the supplied charger, charge on a hard surface while you are awake, store at around half charge if unused for months, and bring the battery indoors before charging in winter.
Never block an escape route with a charging bike.
The law
In the UK and EU, an electric bike that assists to 25 km/h with a motor up to 250 watts and no throttle above walking pace is treated as a bicycle. Anything beyond that is a moped requiring registration, insurance and a licence.
Modifying a bike to remove the speed limit takes it outside that definition entirely.
Buying an electric bike
Check the battery capacity in watt hours rather than voltage alone, and whether replacement batteries are available for that model in a few years. That is what determines the useful life.
Check the total weight, since an electric bike that cannot be carried up steps is a problem in a flat.
Security and insurance
Electric bikes are expensive and stolen quickly. Use a rated lock through the frame and a fixed anchor, register the frame number, and check whether home contents insurance covers it away from the house.
Many policies cap bike cover low or exclude it entirely unless listed separately.
Winter
Rinse salt off, keep water away from the battery contacts and dry the bike after wet rides.
