12 Volt Televisions for Campervans and Boats

Why voltage matters, power draw, mounting for movement and reception

A television running directly from a 12 volt supply avoids the losses and the noise of an inverter, which is why they exist as a separate category for vehicles and boats.

Why 12 volt matters

A mains television needs an inverter to convert battery power to 230 volts, and that conversion wastes energy and draws current even when the set is idle. A native 12 volt television removes that step entirely.

Check the input voltage range, since vehicle supply varies from around 11 to 14.8 volts while charging, and a set rated only for exactly 12 volts may cut out.

Power draw is the real constraint

Work out the consumption in watts and divide by 12 to get amps, then multiply by the hours you watch. A 30 watt set for three hours uses around 7.5 amp hours.

Compare that against your usable battery capacity, remembering that lead acid batteries should not be discharged below about half.

Mounting for movement

A vehicle or boat flexes and vibrates. Use a proper ratcheting or locking bracket rather than a domestic mount, and fix into structure rather than into a thin wall panel.

Fit a secondary retaining strap for travel, and check fixings periodically.

Reception on the move

Terrestrial reception varies constantly, so you will need to retune at each location. An omnidirectional aerial is convenient and less sensitive than a directional one you aim.

Satellite gives consistent coverage and needs a clear view of the sky, which trees and marina masts frequently block.

Screens and glare

A matte anti-reflective screen matters more than resolution in a small bright space. Check the viewing angle, since seating in a van is rarely directly in front.

Power management on a battery system

Watching in the evening is when solar input has stopped, so the television draws straight from the battery. Add it to your daily consumption calculation rather than treating it as incidental.

A low-power set used for two hours is a small load; a large screen plus a soundbar and a games console is not.

Streaming on the move

Mobile data is usually the practical route, and streaming uses a substantial amount of it. Download content on wifi before travelling and check what your data allowance actually covers abroad.

Mounting safely for travel

Anything mounted in a moving vehicle becomes a projectile in a collision. Fix brackets into structural members rather than into lining panels, and use a locking mechanism rather than relying on friction alone.

Practical

Fuse the supply correctly and use cable of adequate size for the run, since voltage drop over thin cable causes unreliable operation.
