Korean Skincare Routines: What Is Worth Copying

Where the approach helps, the steps that matter, sunscreen and buying imported products

Korean skincare brought several genuinely good ideas into the mainstream, along with a routine length that nobody needs.

What is worth copying

Daily sunscreen as a non-negotiable step, gentle cleansing rather than stripping, and a focus on hydration and barrier support. Those three are well supported and account for most of the benefit.

Texture and formulation in Korean sunscreens is frequently more pleasant than Western equivalents, which matters because people apply pleasant sunscreen more generously.

The ten-step routine

A marketing framing rather than a requirement. A cleanser, one active, a moisturiser and sunscreen is a complete routine, and adding steps is usually what causes the irritation people then try to treat.

Essences, ampoules and serums are all leave-on products at different viscosities. The names are marketing categories rather than technical ones.

Sheet masks

A pleasant way to sit still for twenty minutes with occlusion and hydration. The effect is short lived and there is nothing wrong with enjoying it.

Sunscreen filters

Asian and European sunscreens use filters that are not all approved in the United States, which is why some are unavailable there. In the UK and EU, check the product carries UVA protection alongside the SPF.

Buying imported products

Check expiry and manufacture dates, since imported stock sits in warehouses. Buy from established retailers, since counterfeits of popular products exist.

Sunscreen application

Most people apply far too little. Around a quarter to a third of a teaspoon for the face and neck, reapplied every two hours in strong sun and after swimming or towelling.

A sunscreen you enjoy wearing is the one you will apply properly, which matters more than the brand or the country it came from.

Actives

Do not stack several exfoliating actives on the same night. Vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid at night suits most people, with a moisturiser either side.

Skin barrier

Tightness, stinging when products are applied, redness and sudden sensitivity all mean the barrier is damaged rather than that skin is dry. Stop every active for a week or two and use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser.

That reset fixes more skincare problems than any new product.

Buying

Buy small sizes of anything new, and check the open-jar symbol for how long a product lasts once opened.

Where money is best spent

Sunscreen you will use generously, a retinoid, and prescription treatment for a diagnosed condition. Those change outcomes; essences and masks are pleasant additions.

Cost per use matters more than the bottle price, since serums vary enormously in how much you apply.

Introducing products

One every four weeks, patch tested, so you know what caused a reaction.
