Oregano Oil and Strong Botanical Supplements
What the evidence shows, potency and dosing, who must avoid it and interactions
Oregano oil is one of the more potent botanical supplements sold over the counter, and the strength that makes it interesting is also why it needs care.
What the evidence shows
Carvacrol and thymol, the main active compounds, have demonstrable antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. Evidence in humans is limited, with small studies and few controlled trials.
Laboratory activity against an organism in a dish does not establish that a supplement treats an infection in a person. That gap is the central point.
It is not a substitute for treatment
A suspected bacterial infection needs medical assessment. Delaying treatment while trying a supplement is where real harm occurs, and antibiotic decisions should be made by a clinician.
Potency and dilution
Undiluted oregano essential oil is a strong irritant to skin and mucous membranes and should never be taken neat or applied undiluted. Supplement capsules are formulated and diluted for oral use.
Check the carvacrol percentage and the dose per capsule rather than the oil volume.
Who should avoid it
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, children, and anyone with a bleeding disorder or due surgery, since it may affect clotting. Those allergic to plants in the mint family should avoid it.
Interactions
It may interact with anticoagulants and with drugs affecting blood sugar. Tell your doctor and pharmacist everything you take, including anything described as natural.
Gut health claims
Broad antimicrobial action does not distinguish between organisms, so the idea that it targets only unwanted ones is not established.
Reading a botanical label
Look for the Latin species name, which part of the plant is used, the extract ratio or standardised active percentage, and the amount per capsule. Without those, one product cannot be compared with another.
In the UK and EU only authorised health claims may be made, which is why wording is careful and vague.
Essential oils around the house
Keep concentrated essential oils well away from both children and pets. Many are toxic to cats, which cannot metabolise them properly, and several are dangerous if swallowed.
Digestive symptoms
Persistent bloating, pain or a change in bowel habit deserves a proper diagnosis rather than a supplement. Coeliac testing in particular requires you to still be eating gluten.
Unexplained weight loss, any bleeding, or a change in bowel habit over the age of fifty needs prompt medical assessment.
Food first
Dietary diversity has by some distance the strongest evidence for gut health — a wide range of plants across a week, plenty of fibre, and fermented foods.
Quality
Look for published third-party testing, a stated plant species, and a named active percentage rather than a vague proprietary blend.
