Hiring a Boat Without a Skipper
Licences and qualifications, checking the boat, weather and safety
Peer-to-peer boat hire has made a day on the water accessible, and the responsibilities that come with taking a boat out do not change.
Licences differ by country
Germany requires a Sportbootführerschein for boats above a certain engine power, and rules differ between inland and coastal waters. Croatia, Italy, Spain and Greece each have their own requirements and recognise certain international certificates.
Check what the specific country and the specific boat require before booking, since an unlicensed skipper invalidates the insurance entirely.
Experience matters as much as paperwork
A licence does not make you competent in unfamiliar water. Hire a skipper for the first day, or choose a sheltered area, and be honest about what you can handle.
Checking the boat
Go through the handover properly — fuel, engine start and stop, anchor, radio, navigation lights, bilge pump, fire extinguisher and where the lifejackets are and whether they fit everyone aboard.
Photograph any existing damage before leaving, and confirm the deposit terms and what the insurance excess covers.
Weather and planning
Check the forecast, the tides where relevant and your escape options. Wind against tide produces conditions far worse than either alone, and conditions offshore differ from those in a harbour.
Tell someone ashore your plan and expected return.
Children aboard
Properly fitting lifejackets worn at all times, a clear rule about staying seated while moving, and someone whose job is watching them rather than the boat. Drowning is quick and silent.
Sun and glare on water are intense — hats, sunscreen reapplied and shade.
Costs
Check what is included — fuel, cleaning, mooring, the deposit and the insurance excess — since the headline price frequently covers the boat alone.
Sailing versus motor
A motorboat is simpler to handle and consumes fuel. A sailing boat needs more skill and rewards it. Either way, choose something smaller than you think for a first hire.
Practise berthing away from other boats before attempting a busy marina, which is where most damage happens.
Weather again
Cancel if the forecast turns. No day on the water is worth being caught out, and a good operator will understand.
Insurance and deposits
Check what the insurance covers, what the excess is, and whether damage waiver is available. Photograph the boat inside and out at handover and at return.
Confirm what happens if weather prevents the hire, since policies differ.
On the water
Lifejackets worn rather than stowed, particularly for children and non-swimmers. Alcohol and boats is a leading factor in drownings, and skippers are subject to limits.
Learn the basic collision regulations and keep a proper lookout at all times.
