Buying Refurbished and Graded Appliances
What the grades mean, warranties, what to check and where the savings are
Refurbished and graded appliances offer substantial savings, and the terms used are not standardised, which is where buyers get caught out.
The terms
Graded usually means new stock with cosmetic damage — a dented side, a scratched door — that will be hidden once installed. Refurbished means returned or repaired stock that has been tested and restored.
Ex-display has been in a shop, which matters more for screens than for washing machines. Reconditioned varies enormously in meaning.
Ask exactly what was wrong with a specific unit and what was done to it.
Where the damage is
For an integrated appliance, damage to the sides and top is irrelevant. For a freestanding one in a visible position, it is not. Ask for photographs of the actual item rather than a stock image.
Warranty
Check the length, who provides it — the retailer or the manufacturer — and whether it covers parts, labour and call-out. A twelve-month retailer warranty is common and is not the same as manufacturer cover.
Your statutory rights still apply to refurbished goods, which must be as described and fit for purpose.
What to check on delivery
Inspect before signing, run a full cycle promptly rather than weeks later, and check the model number matches what you ordered. Report any problem immediately.
Installation
Remove transit bolts from washing machines before use, level on all four feet, and confirm whether delivery includes installation and removal of the old appliance.
Where the savings are largest
Large appliances with cosmetic damage, since the mechanism is new. The savings are smaller and the risk higher on anything with a battery.
Where refurbished is riskiest
Anything with a battery, since capacity degrades and is rarely stated honestly. Ask for a stated battery health figure on phones and laptops, and check whether a replacement battery is available and affordable.
For appliances, the mechanism matters more than the case, so graded stock with cosmetic damage is comfortably the safest category.
Paying
Use a payment method that offers protection, keep the invoice and the warranty terms together, and photograph the item on arrival before you install it.
Why it is worth doing
Manufacturing accounts for a large share of an appliance's lifetime footprint, so buying refurbished avoids that entirely. It is usually the single most effective environmental choice available in this category.
It also keeps perfectly good working stock out of the waste stream, which is where a great deal of graded product otherwise ends up.
Disposal
Old appliances must go to electrical recycling, and retailers are generally obliged to take the old one away.
