Golf Shoes: Spiked, Spikeless and Fit

Traction and the swing, waterproofing, sizing and course etiquette

Golf shoes exist because the swing puts lateral force through the feet, and traction is what stops that energy being lost or turning into an injury.

Spiked and spikeless

Soft plastic cleats grip best in wet conditions and on slopes, and they are replaceable when worn. Spikeless shoes use moulded sole patterns, are more comfortable to walk in and can be worn off the course.

For firm dry courses and a walking golfer, spikeless is frequently enough. In winter and on hilly courses, cleats earn their place.

Metal spikes are banned at most clubs, since they damage greens.

Replacing cleats

Worn cleats lose grip long before they look finished. Replace them every twenty to thirty rounds and carry the wrench, since a cleat coming out mid-round is common.

Waterproofing

Look for a stated waterproof guarantee with a period attached, which is a manufacturer's own estimate. Membranes work until the outer wets out, so clean and treat the uppers.

Dry them slowly at room temperature, never on a radiator, which cracks leather and delaminates membranes.

Fit

Try them at the end of the day with golf socks, and allow room at the toe since feet swell over eighteen holes. The heel must not slip, since that is where blisters start.

Width matters as much as length, and several brands offer genuine width fittings.

Rotation

Two pairs alternated last considerably more than twice as long as one, because each dries fully between rounds. Use shoe trees or paper.

Socks and blisters

Proper sports socks rather than cotton, which holds moisture and causes friction. Anti-blister socks with a double layer work well over eighteen holes.

Deal with a hot spot when you feel it rather than after it becomes a blister.

Winter golf

Waterproof shoes, spare socks in the bag and a towel. Wet feet on a cold round end the enjoyment long before the round does.

Walking versus riding

Walking eighteen holes covers a substantial distance and is genuinely good exercise, which makes shoe comfort matter more than grip for most amateur golfers.

A lightweight spikeless shoe suits walking golfers on dry courses; anything hilly or wet rewards cleats.

Sun and weather

Four hours outdoors with no shade means sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses with proper ultraviolet protection. Reapply sunscreen at the turn.

Storage

Never leave shoes in a hot car boot, which cracks leather and distorts soles. Use shoe trees or paper and store them somewhere ventilated.

On the course

Clean cleats before the clubhouse, repair pitch marks and avoid dragging your feet on greens.
