Fragrance Dupes and Inspired-By Scents
What they are, why they smell different, the legal position and buying sensibly
Inexpensive fragrances marketed as similar to designer scents are a large and legitimate market, and knowing what they are prevents disappointment.
What they are
A perfumer reverse-engineers a popular scent and produces something similar with cheaper materials. This is not counterfeiting — the product is sold under its own name and does not copy packaging or branding.
Counterfeits are different: they copy the bottle and the name, are illegal, and have been found containing contaminants and unsafe ingredients.
Why they smell different
Expensive ingredients — natural absolutes, particular musks and aroma molecules — are replaced with cheaper substitutes. The opening frequently smells very close and the drydown diverges, which is why a dupe can seem identical in a shop and not by lunchtime.
Concentration is usually lower, so longevity and projection are reduced.
The legal position
A fragrance composition cannot generally be protected in the way a name or a bottle design can, which is why the market exists. Comparison advertising is permitted within limits and must not mislead.
Buying sensibly
Test on skin and judge after four hours rather than at the counter. Buy a small size first, since a dupe that works on someone else may not on you.
Check the ingredient list if you react to fragrance, and buy from sellers who state the concentration.
Applying it
Onto moisturised skin at pulse points, without rubbing the wrists together, which crushes the top notes. Spray onto skin rather than clothing, since alcohol stains silk and scent lingers in fabric for weeks.
Two or three sprays is enough in an enclosed space or an office.
Building a small collection
One light scent for daytime and one heavier for evening covers most needs. Discovery sets and decants let you live with something before committing to a bottle.
Judging a fragrance
Test on skin, one or two at a time, and judge after four hours and again the next day. The opening is the least representative part, and a dupe frequently matches it and diverges afterwards.
Fresh air rather than coffee beans resets your nose.
Storage
Cool, dark and sealed. Heat and light degrade fragrance, which is why a sunny windowsill or a steamy bathroom is the worst place for a bottle.
Reformulations
Fragrances are reformulated over time as ingredients are restricted or costs change, which is why a bottle bought years apart smells different. That is normal rather than a fake.
Check the batch code if you think a bottle is wrong.
Keep the box, which protects the bottle from light.
Storage
Cool, dark and sealed, since cheaper compositions degrade faster.
