Face Masks and Weekly Treatments
What each type does, how often, sheet masks and exfoliating masks
Masks are a weekly ritual rather than a treatment, and knowing what each type actually does keeps the expectations sensible.
Clay and charcoal masks
Absorb surface oil and can loosen surface debris, which makes skin feel matte for a while. They do not empty pores permanently, and leaving one until it cracks dries skin considerably.
Remove while still slightly damp, use on oily areas rather than the whole face, and follow with a moisturiser.
Hydrating and sheet masks
Humectants and occlusion for twenty minutes, which genuinely plumps skin temporarily. The effect lasts hours rather than days, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to enjoy.
Do not rinse afterwards; press in the remaining essence and moisturise over it.
Exfoliating masks
Acids or enzymes left on for a short time. These are actives rather than treats — do not use them alongside a retinoid on the same night, and once a week is plenty for most skin.
If skin stings, tightens or flakes afterwards, the barrier has been overdone.
Overnight masks
Essentially a richer moisturiser with more occlusion. Useful in winter and for dry skin, and unnecessary on top of a good night cream.
How often
Once or twice a week. A mask is the most enjoyable and least important step in a routine, and the daily basics do the work.
Routine order
Cleanse, treat, moisturise, and sunscreen in the morning. A mask replaces the treat step rather than being added on top of everything else, which is how people overdo actives without noticing.
Give any new product four weeks before judging it.
When skin is unhappy
Stop actives for a week or two and use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser. That reset fixes more problems than any new product.
Ingredients worth looking for
Humectants such as glycerin, emollients such as squalane, and occlusives such as dimethicone in a moisturiser. Niacinamide and ceramides both have reasonable evidence and appear at every price point.
Fragrance, including essential oils, is among the leading causes of contact allergy in cosmetics.
Sheet masks and waste
Single-use masks generate considerable packaging waste. A reusable cloth mask with a serum does much the same job.
Doing less
Most skin problems people try to treat with more products are caused by too many products. A fortnight of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen only is a genuinely useful diagnostic.
Introduce one product every four weeks so you know what caused a reaction.
When to see a doctor
Persistent acne, rosacea, eczema or any spreading rash is treatable and a doctor has considerably more effective options than a shop.
Patch testing
Apply anything new to the inner forearm for several days first, since reactions to botanical ingredients are frequently delayed.
