Omega-3 From Algae
Why EPA and DHA matter, where fish get theirs, dosing and choosing a product
Algal omega-3 supplements solve a specific problem, and understanding where fish oil comes from in the first place explains why they work.
The fatty acids that matter
EPA and DHA are the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids with evidence behind them, for cardiovascular measures, triglycerides, eye health and infant brain development.
ALA, the form in flaxseed, chia and walnuts, converts to EPA and DHA in the body at a very low rate. That conversion is the reason plant oils are not a straightforward substitute.
Fish do not make it
Fish accumulate EPA and DHA from the microalgae at the base of the food chain. Algal oil takes it from the original source, which removes the fish entirely and also removes the contaminants that accumulate up the chain.
Dosing
Check the EPA and DHA content per serving rather than the total oil, which is the figure marketing usually leads with. General health guidance commonly sits around 250 to 500 milligrams of combined EPA and DHA daily.
Higher doses are used for specific conditions and should be discussed with a doctor, since omega-3 affects clotting.
Pregnancy
DHA matters for fetal brain and eye development, and algal oil is a practical source for anyone avoiding fish or concerned about mercury. Follow your own health service's guidance on doses.
Choosing a product
Look for third-party testing, a stated EPA and DHA quantity, and packaging that protects from light and air, since these oils oxidise. A rancid fishy smell or taste means it has oxidised and should be discarded.
Store cool and sealed, and check the best-before date on purchase.
Interactions
Speak to a doctor before taking high doses if you are on anticoagulants or have a bleeding disorder.
Sustainability
Algal oil is grown in tanks rather than taken from the sea, which avoids pressure on fish stocks and bycatch entirely. That is one of the clearer environmental arguments in the supplement category.
Check whether the product uses a closed cultivation system and where it is produced.
Capsules
Check whether the capsule shell is gelatine, which is animal derived, since the oil inside being vegan does not make the capsule so. Vegetarian capsules are usually stated explicitly.
Reading the label
Compare products on the milligrams of EPA and DHA per daily serving and how many capsules that requires, since a low-dose capsule taken once daily may deliver very little.
Third-party testing verifies both content and purity, and is worth looking for.
Food first
Oily fish twice a week covers it for people who eat fish, and a varied diet does most of the work.
