Robotic Lawnmowers

How they navigate, wildlife and child safety, setting up and maintenance

Robotic mowers cut a little every day rather than a lot occasionally, which produces a better lawn with less effort and introduces a safety question about what else is in the garden.

How they navigate

Older mowers follow a buried perimeter wire. Newer ones use satellite positioning with a reference antenna, or vision, which removes the wire and needs a clear view of the sky.

Check how the system handles trees, walls and narrow passages, since satellite coverage under dense cover is where these struggle.

Wildlife

Hedgehogs do not run from danger — they curl up, which means a mower can injure them severely. Conservation organisations advise against running robotic mowers at night, when hedgehogs are active.

Set the mower to daylight hours only, check the lawn before it runs, and leave a gap under fences so wildlife can move through.

Children and pets

Blades are small and the machine stops when lifted, and children should still not be in the garden while it runs. Never let a child ride on one or treat it as a toy.

Keep toys, hoses and shoes off the lawn, since anything left out will be run over.

Setting up

Mow the lawn conventionally first, since these are designed to maintain rather than to clear long grass. Set the height sensibly and let it cut frequently — the clippings are small enough to mulch.

Maintenance

Replace the small blades every one to three months, clean the underside regularly and bring the mower and the dock in over winter.

Boundaries and neighbours

Set no-go zones around ponds, flower beds and anywhere with a drop, and check the mower cannot reach a road or a shared path. Most models can be locked with a PIN against theft.

Check the noise level if the garden adjoins a neighbour's seating area.

Is it worth it

For a medium or large lawn mown weekly through the season, a robot saves real time and produces a denser sward. For a small lawn, a conventional mower takes fifteen minutes and costs far less.

Work out the running cost and the blade replacements alongside the purchase price.

Winter

Bring the mower and the dock indoors, charge the battery to around half and store it somewhere dry and frost free.

Lawn care alongside

Frequent light cutting suits a lawn and does not replace feeding, scarifying and aerating. Leaving a corner uncut supports insects considerably and takes no effort at all.

Raise the cutting height in drought rather than watering, since longer grass shades its own roots.

Lawn health

Frequent light cutting encourages denser growth. Leaving some grass longer in a corner supports insects considerably.
