Keeping a Robot Vacuum Working
The maintenance it needs, preparing a room, mapping and when to intervene
Robot vacuums fail in the same few ways, and almost all of them are maintenance rather than faults.
The weekly jobs
Empty the bin, cut hair from the brush bar and the side brushes, and clear the wheels and the drop sensors, since dust on a sensor makes a robot think it is at the top of a stair.
Tap out the filter and wash it if it is washable, then dry it fully before refitting. A damp filter grows mould and a blocked one destroys suction.
The periodic jobs
Replace filters, side brushes and mop pads on the schedule in the manual, since worn parts are why performance falls off after a year. Check the charging contacts on both the robot and the dock.
Descale or clean the water system on models that mop, particularly in a hard water area.
Preparing a room
Cables, socks, charging leads and small toys are what stops a robot. A five-minute tidy before a run is the difference between a clean floor and a tangled machine in a corner.
Cords and rug tassels are the commonest casualties.
Mapping and no-go zones
Let it complete a full mapping run undisturbed, then set no-go zones around pet bowls, cables and delicate furniture. Keep the dock in a permanent place, since moving it confuses the map.
What it does not replace
Edges, corners, stairs and deep cleaning. A robot handles maintenance; a proper vacuum handles the rest.
Choosing one
Check the bin size against the floor area, whether the dock empties it automatically, the suction rating and how it handles thresholds and rugs. Mopping models vary enormously in whether the pad is actually washed.
Check replacement parts are still sold for the model, since a robot without consumables is finished.
Noise and scheduling
Run it when the house is empty, which also means fewer obstacles. A dock that empties automatically is loud for a few seconds and worth siting away from a bedroom.
Privacy
Mapping robots with cameras hold a floor plan of your home. Use a strong unique password, enable two-factor authentication and check what the app shares.
Floors and rugs
Check what the model does at rug edges and thresholds, since high-pile rugs stop many robots and mopping ones must avoid them entirely. Tuck long tassels underneath.
Hard floors suit robots best; deep carpet needs a proper vacuum.
Cost over time
Add filters, brushes, pads and any bags to the purchase price, since consumables are a meaningful annual cost on some models.
Pets
Run it while you are home the first few times, since pet accidents and robots are a well-known combination.
