Gel Manicures at Home

How gel works, lamp safety, HEMA allergy, and removing it without damage

Gel polish lasts far longer than ordinary polish because it cures into a hard plastic film. The two things that cause problems are the chemistry and the removal.

How it works

Gel contains monomers that link into a solid film when exposed to ultraviolet or LED light. It is a chemical reaction rather than drying, which is why the lamp is not optional and why the wavelength must match the product.

Allergy is the main risk

HEMA and related acrylates are common sensitisers, and allergy develops with repeated exposure. Once sensitised, it is usually permanent and can prevent future dental work and some medical procedures using similar materials.

Skin contact with uncured gel is what causes it. Keep product off the surrounding skin, cure fully for the stated time, and never file or touch uncured product.

Itching, redness, swelling or lifting nails around the cuticle means stopping and seeing a doctor.

Lamps and skin

The ultraviolet exposure from nail lamps is low and repeated. Applying sunscreen to the hands beforehand or wearing fingerless gloves is a reasonable precaution and costs nothing.

Preparation

Push cuticles back gently rather than cutting them, since the cuticle seals the nail. Buff lightly only — aggressive filing thins the nail plate, which is what causes the weakness people blame on gel itself.

Removal is where damage happens

Soak in acetone with foil or clips for the stated time and gently push off what has lifted. Never peel or pick, which takes layers of nail plate with it.

If it is not coming away, soak longer rather than forcing it.

Kit and curing

Use the lamp intended for the polish system, since wavelength and timing are matched. Under-curing leaves reactive monomer on the surface, which is exactly what causes sensitisation.

Replace lamp bulbs on schedule where the unit uses them, since output falls over time and under-cures without any obvious sign.

Nail health

Nails grow from the matrix under the cuticle, so damage shows weeks later. Persistent ridging, separation from the nail bed, or dark streaks under a nail need a doctor rather than another coat.

Between sets

Cuticle oil daily is the single most useful habit for nail health, since it keeps the nail plate flexible rather than brittle. Wear gloves for washing up and for any cleaning with detergent.

Biting and picking at the nails do more damage than any polish system does.

Breaks

A week or two between sets lets nails rehydrate. Use cuticle oil every day, which is the single most useful habit there is for nail health.
