A large share of car journeys are short, and those are the ones a bike replaces most easily and the ones cars do worst.

National travel statistics consistently show a substantial proportion of car trips under three miles. Those journeys have cold engines, the worst fuel consumption and the highest emissions per mile, and in towns a bike is frequently as fast door to door.

What makes it work
