Memory Foam: Density, Heat and Toppers
How it works, the density figure, sleeping hot and whether a topper helps
Memory foam behaves differently from springs in ways that suit some sleepers and frustrate others, and the specification that predicts that is rarely on the front of the box.
How it works
Viscoelastic foam softens with body heat and pressure, so it contours to your shape and returns slowly. That spreads pressure at the hips and shoulders, which is why it suits side sleepers and people with joint pain.
The same slow response is why some people find it hard to move on and describe it as sinking.
Density is the durability figure
Measured in kilograms per cubic metre. Low density foam feels fine initially and develops a permanent dip within a year or two. Higher density lasts considerably longer, weighs more and costs more.
Firmness and density are different things — a dense foam can be soft. Ask for the density rather than accepting a firmness label.
Sleeping hot
Traditional memory foam traps heat because it conforms closely and has little airflow. Open-cell structures, gel infusions and perforated layers reduce it, and none removes it entirely.
Anyone who sleeps hot is usually better with a sprung or latex mattress, or a hybrid with a breathable comfort layer.
Toppers
A topper softens a mattress that is too firm and does nothing for one that has sagged, since the support underneath is the problem. That distinction saves a great deal of money.
Five centimetres is a noticeable change; anything thinner mainly adds comfort rather than altering support.
New foam
Expect an initial smell for a few days and ventilate the room. Rolled products need hours to days to expand fully.
Pillows and the same material
Memory foam pillows hold shape and retain heat in the same way. Solid blocks suit side sleepers who need height; shredded foam can be adjusted by removing filling, which is why it suits more people.
Most pillows last one to three years. Fold one in half — if it stays folded rather than springing back, it is finished.
Protectors
Foam cannot be washed, so a washable protector is what keeps a mattress or pillow usable. Choose a breathable one rather than a plastic-backed cover, which traps heat and moisture.
Latex and hybrids
Latex responds quickly rather than slowly, sleeps cooler and is heavy and expensive. Hybrids put a foam comfort layer over pocket springs, which gives contouring with more airflow and easier movement.
For anyone who likes the feel of memory foam but sleeps hot, a hybrid is usually the answer.
Care
Do not soak foam, and use a washable protector.
