Cleansing Devices and Exfoliation
What brushes do, over-exfoliation, who should avoid them and hygiene
Cleansing devices clean more thoroughly than fingers, and the most common problem with them is people using them too often.
What they do
Sonic and rotating brushes loosen sebum, makeup and sunscreen mechanically, which removes more than cleansing by hand. That is a real effect and it is also a form of physical exfoliation.
Used daily alongside chemical actives, it becomes too much for most skin.
Over-exfoliation is the risk
A damaged barrier shows as tightness, stinging when products are applied, redness, flaking and sudden sensitivity. It is frequently mistaken for dryness and treated with more products, which makes it worse.
Two or three times a week is plenty for most people, and once a week for sensitive skin. Stop entirely for a few weeks if the barrier is already compromised.
Who should avoid them
Anyone with active inflammatory acne, rosacea, eczema or broken skin. Brushing over inflamed skin spreads bacteria and worsens irritation.
Anyone using retinoids or acids should be cautious about combining them with mechanical exfoliation.
Technique
Light pressure, letting the device do the work, for the stated time. Pressing harder does not clean better and does damage more.
Hygiene
Rinse and dry the head after every use, and store it outside the shower where it can dry. A permanently damp brush head in a warm bathroom grows bacteria.
Replace the brush heads on the manufacturer's schedule, which is usually every three months.
Chemical exfoliation
Alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic and lactic work on the surface for tone and texture. Salicylic acid is oil soluble and gets into pores, which suits oily and acne-prone skin.
Start once or twice a week at a low concentration and build up slowly, and never combine several different acids on the same night.
Sunscreen
Exfoliating of any kind increases sun sensitivity. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen matters more once you start, not less.
Devices and skin conditions
Anyone with rosacea, eczema, psoriasis or persistent acne should speak to a doctor or dermatologist before adding mechanical exfoliation, since these conditions are all treatable and are frequently made considerably worse by scrubbing.
Prescription treatment is considerably more effective than any cosmetic device.
Getting value from one
Use it as your evening cleanse only on the days you have worn sunscreen or makeup, and cleanse by hand on every other day. That is enough for most skin and makes the heads last longer.
What matters more
A gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and daily sunscreen outperform any device. For texture and tone specifically, chemical exfoliants have considerably more research behind them than any mechanical method does.
