Living With Pet Hair
Why it spreads, grooming, cleaning what actually holds hair, and allergies
Pet hair is managed rather than eliminated, and most of the effort is better spent at the source than on the floor.
Grooming does the most
Brushing a shedding coat several times a week removes hair before it reaches the house, and takes minutes. Double-coated breeds need an undercoat rake rather than a surface brush, particularly during the twice-yearly moult.
Never shave a double coat without veterinary reason, since it protects against heat as well as cold and may not grow back properly.
Bathing occasionally with a suitable shampoo loosens dead hair. Cats groom themselves and still benefit from brushing, which also reduces hairballs.
Where hair actually collects
Soft furnishings, bedding, the edges of rooms and the car. A vacuum with a motorised brush head and a filtered exhaust handles carpet; a rubber squeegee or a damp rubber glove pulls embedded hair out of upholstery far better than any vacuum.
Wash pet bedding weekly and run an empty hot cycle afterwards.
Clothes
A lint roller before leaving, and adding a rubber dryer ball or a dedicated hair-catching sheet helps in the wash.
Vacuums for pet homes
A motorised brush head for carpet, a sealed filtered system so fine allergens are not blown back out, and a tangle-resistant brush. Hair wraps around ordinary brush bars and must be cut off regularly.
Empty the bin often, since a full cylinder loses suction quickly.
Cars
Seat covers and a boot liner save hours. A rubber brush and a handheld vacuum handle the rest.
Grooming tools
An undercoat rake for double coats, a slicker brush for tangles and a rubber curry for short coats. Introduce grooming gently and in short sessions, particularly with a puppy or a rescue.
Mats close to the skin should be cut out by a groomer rather than pulled, since the skin tents up into the mat.
Shedding seasons
Most dogs moult heavily twice a year. Daily brushing for those few weeks removes an enormous amount before it reaches the house.
Air quality
Vacuuming stirs allergens up as well as removing them, so ventilate afterwards and use a cleaner with a sealed filtered system. Washing bedding at sixty degrees does more than any device for dust mites.
See a doctor about symptoms rather than assuming the pet must go.
Allergies
The allergen is in saliva and skin rather than the hair itself, which is why no breed is truly hypoallergenic. Keep pets out of bedrooms, vacuum with a filtered cleaner and ventilate.
See a doctor about symptoms rather than rehoming first.
