Daily or Monthly Contact Lenses: Which Is Actually Right for You

A cost comparison, and the hygiene question nobody asks honestly

The daily versus monthly debate in contact lenses is usually framed as a cost question, and that framing is misleading. Dailies cost more per day. They also remove the single largest cause of contact lens complications, which is a solution routine that people follow properly for about three weeks and then stop.

The honest hygiene question

Monthly lenses require cleaning and storage in fresh solution every night, with the case itself replaced regularly. Topping up old solution rather than replacing it is the most common shortcut, and it is the one most associated with eye infections. Before choosing monthlies, be honest about whether you will actually do this every single night, including the nights you get home late.

If the answer is anything other than a confident yes, dailies are the correct choice regardless of the price difference. An eye infection costs considerably more than a year of lenses in both money and misery.

When monthlies make sense

If you wear lenses every day without fail and you are disciplined about the routine, monthlies are meaningfully cheaper over a year. They also suit stronger or more unusual prescriptions, where the daily equivalent may not exist or may cost substantially more.

Dailies suit occasional wear especially well. If you wear glasses most days and lenses for sport or evenings out, monthlies are actively wasteful — you pay for a month and use eight days of it.

Ordering online

You need a valid contact lens prescription, which is distinct from a glasses prescription. It includes base curve and diameter alongside the power, and those numbers are specific to the lens brand you were fitted with. Changing brand without a new fitting is not a good idea, even when the power matches, because the fit on your cornea will differ.

Buy the same brand your optician fitted, buy in bulk if you wear them daily since per-box pricing drops sharply, and set a reminder before you run out rather than after.

Astigmatism and multifocal lenses

Toric lenses, which correct astigmatism, are weighted to stay in a fixed orientation on the eye. That makes fit more specific than with standard lenses and makes switching brands without a new fitting a worse idea than usual.

Multifocal lenses, for people who need both distance and reading correction, take genuine adaptation time. Give a new prescription a full two weeks before deciding it does not work, unless something is actually uncomfortable.

One rule that overrides everything

Never sleep in lenses not approved for overnight wear, never rinse them in tap water, and remove them immediately if an eye becomes red or painful. Everything else in contact lens care is optimisation. These three are not.
