Booking Hotels Well
When prices move, what the listing hides, cancellation terms and checking reviews
Hotel pricing moves constantly, and a few habits reliably produce a better room at a lower price. Most of them cost nothing but attention.
When to book
City hotels serving business travellers are cheapest at weekends. Leisure destinations are cheapest midweek. Both rise steeply as availability falls.
Prices sometimes drop close to the date when a hotel would rather sell a room cheaply than leave it empty. That is a gamble in peak season and frequently works outside it.
Book flexible where you can
A refundable rate costs more and lets you rebook if the price falls, which happens often. Book flexible, check periodically, and rebook if it drops.
Read the cancellation deadline in local time, since a same-day cancellation charge is usually the full first night.
What the listing does not say
Room size, which floor, whether windows face a main road, and whether there is building work. Recent reviews mentioning noise are worth more than the overall score.
Check whether breakfast, resort fees, parking and city tax are included, since these are frequently added at the property and change the comparison entirely.
Reading reviews properly
Sort by most recent and read the middling ones, which are usually the most informative. Look for repeated themes rather than individual complaints.
Photographs from guests show what the room actually looks like.
Booking direct
Check the hotel's own site after finding a price, since many match or beat it and add extras. Members' rates are frequently lower and free to join.
Location over price
A cheaper hotel a long way out frequently costs more once transport and time are counted, particularly in cities with expensive taxis. Check the walking distance to what you are actually visiting.
Look at the map rather than the description, since the word central is used very loosely in listings.
Travelling as a family
Check the stated maximum occupancy rather than assuming a double room will take a child as well, and confirm whether a cot is free and must be requested in advance.
Payment and protection
Pay by card rather than transfer, and check whether the booking is with the hotel or an agent, since that determines who resolves a problem. Keep the confirmation accessible offline.
Check whether a deposit or the full amount is taken at booking, and what identification or card is required at check-in.
On arrival
Ask politely about an upgrade at check-in, which costs nothing and sometimes works. Report any problem immediately rather than at checkout, when nothing can be done.
Pay by card for the chargeback route and keep the confirmation accessible offline.
