Buying a Budget Laptop Without Regret

The specifications worth insisting on, what to compromise on, and support lifespan

Cheap laptops are frequently fine and occasionally miserable, and the difference comes down to three specifications rather than the brand.

Do not compromise on memory

8GB is the point at which a machine feels slow with a browser and a document open, and 16GB is the sensible floor. Check whether memory is soldered, since many budget machines cannot be upgraded at all.

A machine with one free memory slot is worth considerably more than one without.

Storage must be solid state

An SSD rather than a mechanical hard drive is the single biggest difference in how a cheap laptop feels. Avoid eMMC storage, which is slow and usually soldered. 256GB is a working minimum.

The screen is where budgets are cut

Insist on an IPS panel at full HD resolution. Cheap TN panels have poor viewing angles and washed-out colour, and low brightness makes a machine unusable near a window.

Check the stated brightness — under 250 nits is dim.

What you can compromise on

Processor generation, build materials, the webcam and the speakers. For browsing, documents and video, a modest current processor is entirely adequate.

Support lifespan

Find out how long the manufacturer will issue firmware updates and, for Chromebooks, when the automatic update expiry falls. That date determines how long the machine is safe to use.

Refurbished business machines

Ex-corporate laptops at the same price frequently offer better screens, keyboards and repairability than new budget models. Check the battery health figure.

Setting it up

Remove any pre-installed software you did not ask for, enable full disk encryption, and set up a backup before putting anything important on it.

Keep the machine on a hard surface rather than soft furnishings, which block the vents and shorten its life.

What a cheap laptop is for

Browsing, documents, email, video calls and streaming. It will not edit video, run demanding games or handle large datasets, and buying one expecting that is where disappointment comes from.

Be honest about what you actually do, since most people need far less than the specifications suggest.

Accessories

An external monitor, a keyboard and a stand raising the screen to eye level transform a cheap laptop used daily at a desk, and cost very little.

Refurbished as an alternative

Ex-corporate machines at the same price frequently offer better screens, keyboards and repairability. Ask for the battery health figure and check the operating system licence is genuine.

Manufacturing dominates a laptop's lifetime footprint, so buying refurbished avoids almost all of it.

Making it last

Clean the vents periodically, avoid soft surfaces that block airflow, and keep the battery between roughly twenty and eighty percent where the manufacturer allows a charge limit.

Before buying

Count the ports, check the charger type, and look for reviews mentioning hinge and chassis flex, which is what fails first.
