A Plastic-Free Bathroom Without Fuss

Where the swaps genuinely work, toothbrushes and razors, and what to ignore

Bathroom products generate a steady stream of small plastic items, and a few swaps account for most of it while others are more trouble than they are worth.

The swaps that work

A safety razor with replaceable steel blades, which costs a fraction per shave and produces a recyclable blade rather than a plastic cartridge. Solid shampoo and soap bars, which remove bottles entirely.

Refillable dispensers, a bamboo or replaceable-head toothbrush, and reusable cotton pads for makeup removal.

Toothbrushes

Bamboo handles compost; the bristles are almost always nylon and must be pulled out and binned first. A brush with a replaceable head reduces plastic considerably while keeping a standard handle.

Electric brushes have better evidence for plaque removal than manual ones, so if you use one, keep it and replace heads rather than switching to bamboo for environmental reasons alone.

Safety razors

They shave closely and require a different technique — no pressure, a shallow angle, short strokes, and going with the grain first. Expect a few weeks of adjustment.

Used blades go in a blade bank or a sealed tin, never loose in a bin.

What to ignore

Replacing things that still work. Throwing away a functioning plastic item to buy a wooden one is the opposite of the point — use it up first.

Be sceptical of vague claims. Recyclable, compostable and biodegradable mean different things, and home compostable is a specific and checkable claim.

Period products

Cups, discs and reusable underwear remove a substantial quantity of waste and save money over a year. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on wear time and cleaning.

Refills and buying

Check whether refills are actually available locally or need posting, since a refill system that arrives by courier in plastic packaging has moved the problem rather than solved it.

Buy small first, since solid bars and unfamiliar products suit some people's hair and skin and not others.

Storage

Solid bars last far longer on a draining dish that lets them dry between uses. A bar left sitting in water dissolves in weeks.

Plastic-free cleaning

Refill stations, concentrated tablets and bar cleaners all reduce bottles considerably. Check what the tablets actually contain rather than assuming.

Never mix cleaning products together, and particularly never combine anything containing bleach with anything acidic.

Making it stick

Change one thing at a time as each product runs out, rather than replacing everything at once. A swap that fits your routine survives; a drawer of unused alternatives does not.

Keep whatever you actually enjoy using, since a product you dislike gets abandoned whatever its packaging.

Where the impact really is

Water and energy use in the bathroom outweigh packaging. A shorter shower does more than any product swap.
