Shopping the Sales Without Regret

Why sales work on people, what to buy, returns rights and avoiding waste

Sales convert intention into purchases, and a few rules turn that from a problem into an advantage.

Why they work

A reference price makes a figure look like a saving, urgency removes deliberation, and scarcity does the rest. None of that changes whether you need the item, which is the only question that matters.

Price claims must be genuine in the UK and EU, and enforcement is imperfect, so check the item's recent price independently.

What is worth buying

Things you had already decided to buy, basics you use up, and end-of-season items you will definitely wear next year. A coat bought in February is the same coat in October at half the price.

Keep a list of what you actually need and shop from it rather than browsing.

What is not

Anything in the wrong size, anything needing altering that you will not have altered, and anything bought because the discount was large. The saving on something unworn is zero.

Returns rights

In the UK and EU, distance selling gives a cancellation period for most goods bought online, and it applies to sale items too. In-store returns are the retailer's own policy and are frequently shorter in a sale.

Faulty goods are a separate right that cannot be signed away, sale or not.

Practical

Keep receipts and tags, note the return deadline, and try things on at home promptly rather than at the end of the window.

Black Friday and seasonal events

Track the price of anything you want for a few weeks beforehand using a price history tool, since some discounts are real and some follow a quiet price rise. Decide the maximum you will pay before the day.

Delivery slots and returns windows are both stretched at peak, so order early and check the return deadline.

Payment

Use a method offering protection and be wary of instalment plans that make a purchase feel smaller than it is.

Returns and refunds

Keep the packaging until you are certain, note the deadline the day the parcel arrives, and get proof of postage for anything returned. Refunds should be to the original payment method.

A retailer cannot refuse a refund for faulty goods because an item was in a sale.

Outlet and end-of-line

Outlet stock is sometimes made for the outlet rather than reduced from the main range. Check the fabric and construction rather than assuming it is the same product.

Photograph anything that arrives damaged before removing the packaging.

Unsubscribe from marketing emails you never act on, which removes most of the temptation.

Waste

Sell or pass on what you replace rather than storing it.
