Loungewear and Keeping It Looking New
What makes good loungewear, pilling, velour and terry care, and wearing it out
Loungewear is worn more hours than anything else in a wardrobe and washed constantly, which is why it wears out visibly and quickly.
What makes it good
Fabric weight first — anything thin goes shapeless and transparent within weeks. A cotton-rich blend breathes; heavy polyester traps heat, which matters when it is worn all evening.
Check the waistband construction, since a thin elastic in a folded channel twists and dies first. A drawcord with a proper encased elastic lasts far longer.
Pilling
Short fibres working loose and tangling where fabric rubs — inner thighs, under the arms, where a bag sits. It is friction rather than poor quality, though longer staple fibres pill less.
A fabric shaver removes pills in minutes and transforms how a set looks. Do not pull them off, which drags the fibre.
Velour and terry
Velour is a pile fabric, so it flattens and marks where it is crushed. Wash inside out, cool, never tumble dry, and hang rather than folding under weight.
Towelling holds moisture and needs drying fully, and fabric softener ruins its absorbency.
Washing
Cool, inside out, with similar fabrics. Heat is what shrinks cotton, degrades elastane and mats a pile fabric, and one hot tumble dry does more damage than a season of wearing.
Building a set
Two sets rotated is enough, since anything more sits in a drawer while the favourite is worn constantly. Buy the same size in the pieces you wear most rather than a matching set you only wear together.
Check whether tops and bottoms are sold separately, which is what lets you replace the part that wears out.
Wearing it out
Loungewear worn outside is a style choice and looks considered when the fit is right and the fabric is not pilled.
Sizing and fit
Loungewear is cut generously and sizing varies enormously, so work from the stated measurements. A drawstring waist accommodates more than a fixed elastic and lasts longer.
Check the inside leg, since a trouser that trails is both annoying and a trip hazard on stairs.
Washing
Wash inside out and cool with similar fabrics, and never tumble dry, which mats pile and degrades elastane. Air it between wears rather than washing after every evening.
A fabric shaver is the single most useful thing you can own for loungewear.
Value
Work out the cost per wear honestly, since loungewear is worn more than almost anything else. Spending a little more on fabric weight frequently costs less over two years.
Buy at the end of a season rather than the start.
When it is finished
Stretched cuffs, a waistband that no longer recovers and thinning at the knees. Old sets make good cleaning cloths.
