Choosing a Maldives Resort
One island one resort, transfers, board basis and what actually varies
Almost every Maldives resort occupies its own island, which means you commit to one place for the whole trip. That makes the choice unusually consequential.
The transfer determines your day
Resorts are reached by speedboat, domestic flight plus speedboat, or seaplane. Seaplanes only operate in daylight, so a late arrival means an overnight in Malé before continuing.
Transfers are expensive, frequently several hundred per person return, and are not always included in the headline price. Check the cost and the duration before anything else.
Board basis matters more than usual
There is nowhere else to eat. Half board, full board and all-inclusive differ enormously in final cost, and paying for meals individually at resort prices adds up very fast.
Read what all-inclusive actually covers, since premium drinks, some restaurants and excursions are routinely excluded.
The house reef
For snorkelling, a good accessible house reef is the single biggest differentiator between resorts. Some islands have excellent reef from the beach and others require a boat trip for everything.
Check recent reviews and photographs rather than marketing images, and ask about reef condition.
Villa types
Overwater villas are the image and are hotter, further from the beach and not always best for families with small children. Beach villas are frequently larger and better value.
Season
The dry season runs roughly January to April with the highest prices. The wet season is cheaper, still warm, and brings shorter heavy showers rather than constant rain.
Budgeting the trip
The room rate is frequently the smaller part. Transfers, board basis, excursions, spa treatments and the green tax and service charge all add substantially, and everything is priced in dollars.
Ask for a full quotation including transfers and taxes before comparing resorts.
Diving and excursions
Book diving with a resort centre well in advance in season, and allow at least eighteen to twenty-four hours between a final dive and flying home.
Getting there
Check baggage allowances on the seaplane or domestic leg, which are considerably lower than the international flight and strictly enforced. Excess baggage is charged by the kilogram and adds up quickly.
Build in a buffer between flights, since a missed seaplane means an overnight stay in Malé at your own cost.
Sun and sea
The sun near the equator is intense. Use high-factor reef-safe sunscreen, cover up in the middle of the day and drink more water than feels necessary.
Practical
Respect local rules on alcohol and dress outside resorts, use reef-safe sunscreen, and never touch or stand on coral.
Check the resort policy on children before booking, since a number of them are adults only.
