Balcony Solar Systems
How plug-in solar works, the German rules, realistic output and safety
Plug-in balcony solar has become mainstream in Germany, and it works within a specific regulatory framework that determines what you can install.
How it works
One or two panels feed a small inverter that plugs into a domestic socket, and the electricity is consumed by whatever is running in the home at the time. Anything not used is exported without payment on most simple setups.
It lowers the electricity you buy from the grid rather than creating a cash payment, so the savings depend on your baseline daytime consumption.
The rules in Germany
Balcony systems are permitted up to a defined inverter output, raised in recent years, and must be registered in the Marktstammdatenregister. Registration with the network operator has been simplified.
Rules change, so check the current limits and requirements before buying rather than relying on an older guide.
Tenants and flats
Recent German law has strengthened tenants' and flat owners' position on installing balcony solar, while permission and safe mounting still matter. Get agreement in writing and check building rules.
Realistic output
Orientation and shading dominate. A south-facing unshaded balcony produces far more than an east or west one, and a single shaded panel loses disproportionately because cells are wired in series.
Work out annual kilowatt hours rather than peak watts, and compare against your daytime base load.
Safety and mounting
Panels are heavy and balconies are exposed. Use proper brackets rated for wind load, fixed into structure, and have any doubt checked by a professional.
Use the inverter and cabling specified, never an extension lead or a multi-way adapter.
Working out the saving
The saving depends on how much of the generated electricity you actually consume during daylight. A household empty all day self-consumes far less than one with somebody in.
Shift dishwashers, washing machines and hot water to the middle of the day where you can, which is where most of the benefit comes from.
Equipment and safety
Use an inverter certified for the market, panels rated for outdoor mounting, and the cable and plug arrangement the manufacturer specifies. Never improvise a connection or use an extension lead.
Check the socket circuit and whether your meter is suitable, since older meters can run backwards and must be exchanged.
Expectations
A balcony system offsets background consumption — fridge, router, standby — rather than covering a household. Payback is typically several years.
Elsewhere in Europe
Rules on plug-in solar differ considerably between countries, and several permit nothing comparable. Check your national and network operator requirements before ordering anything.
Registration is usually free and quick, and skipping it can invalidate insurance.
Batteries
Storage increases self-consumption and adds considerable cost.
