Buying a Television

Panel types compared, brightness and room light, refresh and inputs, and sizing

Television specifications are marketed on numbers that matter less than the panel type and how bright your room is.

Panel technology

OLED produces true black because each pixel switches off, which gives outstanding contrast and suits dark rooms. It is less bright overall and, in normal use, static-image burn-in is a small but real consideration.

LED and QLED panels are brighter and better in sunlit rooms, with black levels depending on how the backlight is dimmed. Full array local dimming with many zones is the specification that matters here.

Match it to the room

A bright living room with large windows wants a bright LED or QLED. A room you can darken suits OLED. This single question matters more than anything else on the specification sheet.

Resolution and size

4K is standard and 8K makes almost no visible difference at normal viewing distances. Most people buy too small — a common guide is a viewing distance of around 1.5 times the screen width for 4K.

Measure the wall and the seating distance before choosing.

Refresh rate and gaming

120Hz with HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate and low input lag matter for current games consoles. For film and television, they make no difference.

HDR

A television needs genuine brightness to do anything with HDR. Budget sets claiming HDR support frequently cannot display it meaningfully.

Sound

Thin televisions have poor speakers. A soundbar improves the experience more than moving up a screen tier.

Buying and delivery

Measure the space including any stand, check whether the stand feet fit your furniture, and measure the route into the room. Large televisions are awkward rather than heavy and need two people.

Check the wall bracket pattern before buying a bracket, since it is stated in millimetres on the back of the set.

Setting it up

Switch from the shop demonstration mode to a filmmaker or cinema preset, which is far more accurate. Turn off motion smoothing for films, which produces the effect people describe as looking like a soap opera.

Buying refurbished or graded

Graded stock with cosmetic marks on the frame sells at a substantial discount and performs identically. Check what the grade actually describes and what warranty applies.

Ask whether it was a display model, since panels run at full brightness in shops for months.

Energy use

Compare the stated annual consumption rather than the letter grade alone, and note that reducing brightness from the shop setting saves energy and looks better.

Practical

Count the HDMI inputs, check wall bracket compatibility, and turn off the shop demo picture mode, which is far too bright and inaccurate for home use.
