Connected Appliances: What Is Worth Having
Which features are useful, the support lifespan question, privacy and buying sensibly
Almost every large appliance is now sold with an app, and a small number of connected features are genuinely useful while most are not.
The features that earn their place
Remote notification that a cycle has finished, delayed start timed to a cheap electricity tariff, and fault diagnostics that tell an engineer what is wrong before the visit.
Energy monitoring is useful where a tariff varies through the day, since running a dishwasher or a washing machine overnight can cost meaningfully less.
The features that do not
Starting a washing machine remotely, which still requires somebody to have loaded it. Cameras inside fridges. Voice control of things you are standing in front of.
Support lifespan is the real question
An appliance lasts ten to fifteen years and an app rarely does. Ask how long the manufacturer commits to updates, and check the appliance works fully without the app or the cloud.
An appliance that will not run a basic cycle without a working server is a poor purchase.
Privacy and security
These devices sit on your home network and report usage data. Read what is collected, use a strong unique password with two-factor authentication, and keep firmware updated.
Consider a separate guest network for appliances, which limits what a compromised device can reach.
Buying on the things that matter
Energy consumption, noise in decibels, capacity, spin speed and the length of the warranty. These affect daily life far more than connectivity.
Compare the stated annual consumption rather than the letter grade alone, since the grades were rescaled.
Installation and noise
Level appliances properly on all four feet, since vibration at spin is almost always an unlevel machine or transit bolts left in. Check the noise rating in decibels for anything in an open-plan kitchen.
Leave the ventilation gaps the manufacturer specifies around fridges and freezers, since restricted airflow costs energy and shortens life.
Maintenance
Run a hot maintenance wash monthly, clean filters, leave washing machine doors ajar between uses and wipe the door seal.
Energy and running cost
Work out the annual consumption in kilowatt hours and multiply by your unit rate, which tells you what an efficient machine actually saves over its life. Washing at thirty degrees and filling the drum matter more than the efficiency grade.
Fridges and freezers run continuously, so their annual figure is the one worth comparing carefully.
Warranties
Check the length and whether registration is required, and keep the receipt and the model number somewhere you will find them.
Repairability
Check spare part availability, which is now required for several categories in the UK and EU. An appliance that can be repaired lasts twice as long.
